The front brakes in my 94 Discovery have started making sqeaky noises when I'm not braking! It is a consant noise but it gets worse if I turn left and goes away when I turn right or push on the brakes at any time. The pads seem fine too. Any suggestions? The noise is not only annoying to me but I'd suppose that it is to everyone else on the road. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

I, like much of the people on this board, have combated brake squeal (in this form, and many others) for a long time.

The ONLY thing I've found to work for longer than a couple of weeks, is new pads. Genuine last the longest of the ones I've tried, but my rears are squeeking again, just like yours are, so maybe I'll try the kevlar ones from AB...

Oscar -- it's not too good to have brakes that squeak when you're not braking and the differeence when turning is also alarming. It's probably more than just pad wear. Check to see if the front brakes are adjusted correctly or if you have some loose components.

check for worn/loose wheel bearings,
ALL rover brakes make noise & there is
'normal noise'& not good noise.
when turning; is a not good brake noise.
check it out ASAP, your life may depend on it!

brakes hate mud, drive the river before
heading back to camp so they get washed off.

Are your disks / pads dirty? If there is any form of tiny debris there, it'll squeek like mad. Go to a power washer (make sure that the brakes are not hot ot the touch) and clean them good...

Applying left foot braking while driving can also ensure brake cleaning / drying after a water crossing...

Anyone have there brakes squeal intermittently? My brakes are driving me nuts, one stop they squeal, the next they don't. Other than cleaning with brake cleaner, what else can I do? thanks...

I worked on mine several times, cleaning lubricating parts, etc, etc, etc. Finally just replace the pads even thou there was lots of wear left on them. No more squeek.

Squeaky brakes. Well, mine do it to. Only when I have my foot on the brake and I am finaly coming to a stop. I have tried every brake pad I could find. Organic, semi metalic, different brands of each, factory ones, anti sieze, every thing that I could think of and it was only a temp fix. They would squeak after a couple of weeks. I had my rotors replaced (all 4) and new factory pads put on. For 3 months they were squeak free. Now they are squeaking agian in the rear but, only after they get warmed up. I have given up on it.

I had the same problem for a while. I learned that only Dealer Pads have a shim on the back of the plate which helps the pad from chattering and squeaking. Other pads may have the LR logo but are secondary parts and do not have this shim.

Since I have used these Dealer Pads, I have not had any break noise. Yes, you get screwed on $ at the dealer, but it seems to solve the issue.

My rears are shrieking when they're warmed up - sounds just like that sacfull of kittens that I drag behind the disco sometimes. Shattered the window of a chopped honda in the lane next to me at a stoplight last week. Started shrieking after a long, hot, & dusty offroad trip last month. This weekend I'm applying that brake pad goop available at any auto parts store. Will also bevel the leading edge of the pad & scrub the rotors with a scour pad. These are the lockheed pads.

I've never tried it, but have heard (always a reliable source of information) that slotted and drilled rotors may help -- but at some expense. Otherwise no type of brake pads seem to help.

I have heard that too Mark. I just bought new rotors though so trying the slotted ones will have to wait till these are worn out.

It was reccomended to change all 4 brake pads on my 99 DiscoII. What is the going dealer rate? (Parts + Labor)

Also, what is the deal about rotors? Do they have to be replaced like brake pads?

Thanks !!

FWIW,

In my 2 years of owning a Rover product, I have come to learn that these vehicles eat brakes. My '00 D2 was making all kinds of noise. I went and ordered a set of non-rover brand pads and swapped them all out. Guess what, the noise got worse! I applied the anti-squeal crap, checked torque on the calipers, cleaned the rotors and all of this resulted in more noise. I conveyed my displeasure to LR when I dropped the pig off for the 30K service. My rotors were still in tolerance for width, but I had a shit load of grooves in them. So I bit the bullet and replaced all 4 rotors and 4 sets of pads. Guess what, no noise whatsoever. Even after the MAR with all that mud, water, and crap...no noise at all. So from my personal experiance, I recommend buying genuine LR crap. But so the research, there are more inexpensive LR part dealers out there....
