My 01 Disco2 is dead again. 5am in the morning, just after I filled up at the Shell station getting ready for a weekend trip, the damn car won't start. This time, nothing works, Battery is new installed by dealer 1 month ago. But I am sure it is not the battery coz no light, clock, alarm, works. I had not idea. Even the shift can't go down to "N" for the tow guy to winch up the flat bad. He had to drag it up!
Any idea what's wrong?

I don't know, but it sounds a LOT like a security alarm trick...check that first...its happened before, sounds like its immobilized...

I didn't know you can put the t-case on "N" while the shifter is on "P"

security alarm trick? It will disable EVERYTHING?
I mean, NOTHING works... no clock, no light... no nothing.

yup, that the alarm. If the battery is dead, you'll need to play with it after it's charged to overcome the alarm. Try close closing everything, locking the car with remote and unlocking.
Hope the helps.

Thanks for all the advice. The battery was new, only 1 month old replaced by dealer under warrenty and everything was fine for a month. The car is 16 months old.

Symptoms: No light, no clock, can't lock with remote. Basically, it doesn't respond to anything at all, seems like the battery is not there.

How bad: Loaded with gear for a long road trip. Filled up and the car was dead. Had to cancel the trip for the weekend because of this.

Not enough? : Can't even shift from "P" to "N" to winch onto the flat bad. T-case won't move neither. Tow guy had to DRAG the truck on the flat bad. (3 wheels moving, 1 wheel drag)

Worest : the stupid tow guy just leave the truck in front of the dealer's service building. It was Saturday and Service didn't open until today and I got a damn parking ticket! Dealer wont pay for it.

Any idea who I should contact for the parking ticket? It is just $20 but I don't want to pay for something that I shouldn't.

Thanks

the tow company failed to take resonable care with your truck when they dispatched it where they did. if you paid with a CC i'd charge them back for it then pay the ticket.

the ticket because it is written to a vehicle in your name is yours.

just as the tow truck company failed to complete a contract in a resonable way is there lose

in my eyes thats how I'd see it

I think Musky might have an idea here. No doubt, you didn't tell the tow truck company to plant the car somewhere other than on the dealer's property. If you told them to take it to the dealer for service I would not be pleased to find it had been left on the street.

Same failures occurred on my 97 Disco when the alternator crashed. Maybe yours was slowly failing and just finally bit the dust at the station? Check it out because that solved my problem.

muskyman, I understand... just got pissed and need some place to let out...
Worse yet yet yet.... the little crack on the windshield became a large crack across the big screen. Now, another visit to the shop.... Just bad luck I guess

charlie, vent away thats one of my favorite things to come here for.

the windshield thing may be covered with a no deductable thing on your insurance. some companys require you have it if its leased or on bank loan so now alot of companys just tack it on. they wont come tell you about it so call your agent and check.

go get the truck dirty when you get it back and remind your self why you got a rover

hang in there charlie

The alarm isn't going to kill all those accessories. Just because your battery is new doesn't mean it isn't bad or that it isn't now dead. Batteries, like any other man made product can be bad from the get go. Also, like Lee said, your alternator could be out and not charging the battery and it finally died. I have also found many times where a battery wasn't installed well and the cables either weren't bolted onto the battery propery, not cleaned, or just plain defective.
