Just wanted to ask if piston slap on DII's is normal. I hear a very slight knocking sound when my engine rev's exceed 2000 rpm's. The land rover dealership states that this is resonance from the pistons and that this resonance is due to the aluminium component of the engine and is normal for the DII engines. Do other DII owners hear a similar sound? Any information is appreciated. |

LR service writers go to the same yoga classes as obstetricians and pediatricians where they learn to chant the mantra "no, that's normal, there is nothing to worry about". I have a DII. so do two aquaintances, only one of them knocks on acceleration (thankfully not mine), we all pretty much run the same gas. go figure. on her truck it sounds more like detonation despite 93 octane. my experience with piston slap (older Jeep I6) was that it was more of an at idle phenomenon. |

99 D2, 39K miles, my engine is flawless, knock on wood. I accidently revved it up to 6000rpm the other day in 2nd gear. I couldn't believe how smooth it was, I thought there was a rev limiter, but I never felt it. The only thing I do notice is a funny scraping kind of sound when warming up, kinda like taking two pieces of 220 grit and rubbing them together, every 5-8 seconds, about 4 or 5 times. Are you burning/loosing oil at an abnormal rate? |

SirRobin, What has your friend done, whose DII sounds like it is detonating? Or what have the guru's at LR informed your friend is the problem? |

I believe LR stated it was normal. She has tried different brands of gas, injector cleaners, just about every brand of snake oil. I think she has decided to live with it... last I heard. |

The question is, are you hearing piston slap or detonation at 2,000 RPM's? What are the conditions when this occurs? For example, my Disco II makes a very faint rattling sound (piston slap) for the fist 30 seconds or so when cold- usually after sitting overnight. And no, this is not from the lifters. This is different than the slight knocking at around 2,000 rpm's when under load (accelerating)and cold. This occasionally occurs despite the use of 91 octane gas (highest available here in CA). This is not a major issue and can be minimized by running some fuel conditioner (such as Chevron Techron) through the system from time to time. In either case, to best identify the issue, try to isolate and identify the conditions under which it occurs. Nonetheless, it is probably nothing worth losing any sleep over. Cheers, CARL |

Carl, Thanks for the information. My engine also has piston slap when you first start it, when it is cold, and disappears after 30 seconds. The slight knocking (is it detonation?) sound occurs when the engine is in drive and cruising at over 2000 rpm's (engine is warm). It gets drowned out when on the highway. I also live in Canada and run 91 Octane fuel. I also recently had the injectors cleaned, and the faint sound is still there. I took it in to the LR dealer, and they informed me that this is a normal sound. Now that I have better identified the issue, can you give me any advice if I have reason to worry or not? Thanks Again. Arman. |

I have the same sound Carl mentions. Rattling knock when cold. Faint knock at light acceleration. It sounds normal under heavy acceleration and going up hill. I took it into the dealer (it has always sounded this way) because I was becoming concerned. I was told that the cold start knock was a "secondary intake" where warm exhaust gases are fed into the intake. This made sense because my first thought was it was an exhaust leak. It is a combonation of a knock and a "putt-putt" (if that makes any sense.) I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. It's either normal or I've got company to comiserate with. Now my friends DII with ace makes the weirdest frickin' noises!!! |
