Not limited to five, but just trying to list the TOP five.

Anyone got Band-Aids in theirs? (for all the knuckle busting)

I've got a set of metric sockets, duct tape, Gerber multi-tool, hammer, set of open ended wrenches.

I would suggest getting a 28mm socket. Our local mechanic buggered up the lug nuts on my disco and now the only way I can get them off is with a 28mm socket and a breaker bar! I would recommend everyone have one in their disco.

Depends on who you are. For most Discovery owners, this list will be fine:

1. Starbucks Credit Card
2. Maps to locations of, and List of dates for your kid's soccer games.
3. Book, Magazine, Newspaper, Make-up Kit, Cell Phone, or other distracting device for those long traffic jams.
4. Spare change for parking meter.
5. Someone to tell you what that "Little Lever" is in front of the "Big Gear Shift Lever".

Lever? I think you're mistaken. That's a hook to hold up your shopping bags. That way they won't fall over when you turn left. :)

Make sure if you get a socket set, you get the 6 sided sockets, not the 12 sided.

I purchased some 12 point sockets, and .. 27mm wont fit on the lugs, 28 will, but if you're not really careful, you slip and strip the lugnuts.

Right now I have a fairly round lugnut on the front of the rover. I'm going to have to get a few lugnuts for replacement(hell if I pay the dealership 13+ dollars for one), then I guess I use an old socket + hammer to pull the lug off.

Wheee!

Streak-

To each his own. But frankly, I wouldn't buy a new Rover - Actually I probably wouldn't buy a new Toyota either (even if I did have the money). Anyway, when I bought my '94 Discovery I went through a lot of trouble to find a good one. Drove a lot of them, and did a lot of research. Well, as it turns out, it is probably better to have a used Rover with 30-40k miles on it than a new one. Because by then the wierd problems have been worked out. So far, my theory has worked. I have had no problems - and I do off road on a regular basis.

I have never personally met anyone who has had a Land Rover for a long period of time who did not ended up happy with it in the end. But I have known several people who have had the same experience you have had. i.e. My uncle has a '96 Range Rover, for the first 6 months he had nothing but trouble. He was stranded several times, and could not drive the car several times - even when he was at home. But once the problem was fixed... He now has over 300k miles on it and does not want to get rid of it.

Streak,
Why do you continue to monitor this board if you don't like Land Rovers so much. Just sell it and buy a damn Honda.

1. KY for those untimely trips to the dealership
2. prophylactics for your protection while at the dealership
3. a copy of the lemon law (good reading while in the "bent over" position)
4. a calendar to count:
A. the days required for the soreness in your a$$ to go away (from the above activities)
B. the days your rig sits at the dealership
C. the number of times you called only to hear "we were real backed up today and didn't have a chance to get to your rig, we'll get on it first thing in the morning"
5. a good lawyer, to bail your a$$ out of jail for driving your rig through the showroom window because the problem the dealer fixed popped back up five minutes after you got your rig back.

Top Five Items For Your Discovery:

1. Miniature Portrait of Benjamin Franklin inscribed with the words "United States of America" and "One Hundred Dollars".

2. Miniature Portrait of Benjamin Franklin inscribed with the words "United States of America" and "One Hundred Dollars".

3. Miniature Portrait of Benjamin Franklin inscribed with the words "United States of America" and "One Hundred Dollars".

4. Miniature Portrait of Benjamin Franklin inscribed with the words "United States of America" and "One Hundred Dollars".

5. Miniature Portrait of Benjamin Franklin inscribed with the words "United States of America" and "One Hundred Dollars".

Now that you are a collector of fine, hand-crafted artwork you will have enough tools to fix practically any minor road problem. Then, in the cases where five Benjamins won't help you, they can be used to tow you home.

I'm amazed your rear speaker has no dents in it! :)

Someone commented on the ACE hoses... if you have ACE I would (and do) bring along a serpentine belt for a NON-ACE vehicle. If your ACE ever fails then you just slip on the new belt and you have a non-ace vehicle that will get you home and to the dealer if needed.

Jack, I'm not sure what you're asking about the front diff. Not sure if this is what you're after, but no retainers up front. Right now the shocks are limiting the travel, and keep the springs from unseating. Thanks for the compliments though.

No Good having all the tools if you haven't got a repair manual that instructs how to fix things.

I second the JB weld. I buddy of mine cracked his diff open in the creek crossing MAR and had to buy some. I bought one of those stanley tool boxes that has three sections (I only use the top box and the drawers).
1)I bring a 1 foot long breaker bar 1" ID (scrap) to save your back and your knuckles
2)6x8 tarp has been very useful and packs neatly
3)zip ties have been used quite a bit and aren't as hard to remove as duct tape is sometimes
4)Can of Kroil (this stuff will loosen anything)
5)Most used item in my vehicle- Hand wipes in the round plastic dispensor- lemon scent. Cleans plastic, screw threads, grease, fishguts, mud you name it. I also carry 2 qts. semi syth oil, qrt of steering fluid and gallon of coolant in a little box.
