i've heard alot of people talking of axles being broken what are the causes of this? and how can you prevent breaking an axle? also i've been told to fit bigger tires it helps to move your axle back 1" , if this is true how do you move it back? |

It's easy to not break axles - just keep it stock! Larger (heavier) tires + lockers is the winning combination for axle breakage. |

actually i will disagree and say that lockers help in NOT breaking axles. with open diffs you have to use momentum, and that can lead to tires unloading and then coming down and gripping, IE shockloading. with lockers there is NO shock loading, as you keep a steady amount of throttle and let the truck creep. have you ever driven a vehicle with lockers before or are you just spouting? |

Lots of gas + lots of wheel spin all of a sudden hitting traction = breakage. While there are lots of differant things that can contribute to it (larger tires, stock axles, etc) most of the case I have seen people talking about breaking axles is that they were way to heavy on the gas at the moment the wheels finally grabbed. There was a thread not too long ago on the D90 Group with people submitting this kind of info for someone taking a poll. |

95 Disco with 92,000 miles ARB's front and rear and 265 tires. I've been on a lot of tough trails including Lower Helldorado at Moab haven't broke anything yet. Maybe I'm just lucky |

Weldkid, I disagree with your assesment. I've broken two stock axles WITH lockers. No tires spin at all, no momentum, no bouncing, no heavy gas. Touqed it to death. Lockers will help you break axles...expecially the driver side rear. |

here's another round and round debate lockers can act both to protect your axles and can assist in breaking them. lockers will allow you to crawl through terrain that other wise you would have had to use momentum to cross. in that your power is applied with precision. and not to excess. but lockers will also take you into positions that you otherwise would not have been able to get into such as nose down taking a hard turn slowly and putting 100% of all the drive force on one corner SNAP!!!! so they can do both, the trick is in knowing what method of driving is most likely to cause what and then make a good decision on line ,speed, and tactic to come out unscathed. |

when axles break do they actually snap into? can you break an axle onroad lets say if you have bigger tires and stock axles? |

well here is my experience. 1987 and 88 range rovers, 10 spline axles, 265/75 MTs. with open diffs i had to use momentum and more than once stopped myself because i knew what was going to happen, shock load= SNAP. then, i got a rear detroit locker. still 10 spline, and now i can drive with much more finess and go many places. never broke an axle in one year of hard wheeling, and not like bunny trail wheeling either, lots of wet rocks and hill climbs, much like tellico. last month i pulled out the locker (anyone wanna buy it?) and went back to open because i had just seriously increased tire size (from 31 to 36). after one trip of hard wheeling again, this time with open diffs, i went more places with the open diff and swampers than rear locked with 31s. and i still didnt break an axle. BUT i attribute this to the fact that i knew i was pushing the axles far beyond their limits (already had inspected and twisted the splines on the DS rear), so i made it a point to spin the tires as little as possible. i vote for lockers with stock axles and CVs for a 32 and under, but then over that youre going to have to start looking at upgrading. |

weld kid, why is tire size the reason you are removing the locker? seems to me you would have to spin the tires even less with a locker and with those big meats and spinning is more dangerous. aslo the detroit is much stronger than the stock carrier, so if you dont blow an axel the diff might grenade. rd |

rob, tire size was a reason because the difference between a locker and bald 31s and a locker with brand new super swamper TSLs is enormous. there is so much more gripping force on a wheel and the added diameter means more gas has to be given to move it, so therefore the stressed axleshaft would be stressed to the breaking point. i know that the detroit is much stronger and that the stock open carrier sucks, and that is why i was carrying a spare 3rd member with me along with 2 spare axleshafts |

i'm asking this question because i'm going to go with 255\85 tires which in the super swamper trxus is 32.7x10.1 i do some light wheeling actually now because there is no where to go where i live. But I want to meet up for the next MAR type meeting and ride with everyone from this board and others. my question is i have the lift to fit these tires but i have no lockers and stock axles what about these tires 32.7" if i'm careful not to spin and not to over do my limits of my truck will i be pretty safe in installing these tires? |

You should be OK Blake, if you are careful. |
