This is the plate RTE sells for $95 that allows Disco owners to mount a bigger spare tire on the back.

I want to try and make one myself (save money) and I'd like a pic of RTE's for reference.

If it's a DII, just turn the tire mounting bracket upside down. Holds a 265/75 with just enough clearance to open the back without rubbing

Curquieta is right. If its a D2 just invert the original tire mount. I did it over the weekend by following EE`s Tech write up. Its simple. Heres the Link just follow it!!!

Why is it supposed to be wrong using other ideas and products to manufacture your own things for your own vehicle? Aren't we always picking up ideas from here & there, adapting smth of this and smth of that - and I guess Ned would change the concept a bit as well. Don't tell me you make up anything without reference to what you've already seen or tested - you don't do anything totally blindfolded.
Seems to be a brilliant idea making stuff yourself, rather than getting lost in the easy chair watching telly.
Making up smth for sale is on the contrary a legal issue.

can someone give me detailed pics of Kyle's KVT bumper? I want to save some money and build my own and use his for reference.

Christ people. Making your own stuff to save a little money shouldn't be a problem. It's not like I'm going public with my new company Rover"time" or anything.

And as John at RTE will attest, I've given plenty of my hard earned money to his company. Shock mounts, rock sliders, rear links... this is stuff I leave to John's wisdom and happily hand over my credit card.

This however is one thing I feel I can take on myself. And, in turn, frees up more money for me to spend on some of the other creations John has come up with over the years.

Thanks to those who offered up suggestions on DIIs. Unfortunately, I've got a DI. But I've already come up with a few ideas on the best way to do it.

aside from the fact that there are photos on rte's website. if you want to blatently copy someone else's work and you have the skill to do it, i think you can find your own photos...

Oh Mikey... it's a tire mount.

Save your energy for that $G-knock off rear bumper I'm making.

Come on fellas. Ned is making a one time item for personal use. Even with pics of the RTE plate, I suspect his design would end up looking and being quite different.

Ned is not promoting stealing vendor designs and then going into competetion--which you might notice happens all the time.

Ned, I just redrilled the holes about 3/4" lower and took a grinder to some of the excess metal. You will have to cut some around where the window wiper arm rests. Sorry no pics. This is super secret design :)

hey,

it is no skin off my nose...i just see so few people making really good products for discos that i like to buy stuff to hopefully fund r&d on things not made yet, but could be made. maybe i am lucky, but $100 is not a big deal. if you really want to save money, then there are plenty of links to turning your mount over. at no cost. i am not saying don't try your own thing, but hell, i would never say out loud i want to copy someone else's work or pattern my stuff after it. shit, just post and ask for ideas. i am sure someone would say "hey, i have rte's mount and here are some photos." and i would never say i have a great business relationship with a business so i want to copy their work instead of paying for it. maybe it is me. but afterall, there are people calling bluffs all the time on this board, so i guess i am just joining in. good luck in your project.

This thread is really dumb. I agree that it should not be a big deal for someone to make their own version of a product they have seen. How many people making bumpers, did so without ever looking at another persons bumper? How many of the features of one persons product, came from bits and parts of other peoples products? This is a fairly small nit group, and I imagine if Ned went into production with these things, we could all call him on it.

There are still going to be plenty of people that will rather buy the item, than make it. This is not going to put an end to the market. For example, how hard could it be to make a lower shock mount, or a spacer, or for that matter a couple of ring clamps with attachments welded on? Anyone could make these things if they have the know how. As easy as these things seem to make, there will still be people to buy them.

I am a perfect example. If I need a spare tire plate, I would buy it, but it doesn't bother me that someone else can make one to save some dollars. When I needed light mounts, I bought them, althought they don't seem to be that difficult to make.

Cut Ned some slack on this and find something more worthy of your time to argue about. Ned, if I had pics, I would share them with you. Hell, John at RTE would probably share them with you. Aren't we all here to promote the hobby, not bitch about every nit picky little thing.

yeah Ned, didn't mean to come off like a class 1, but re-read your original post and tell me it doesn't sound bad :)

also check east coast rovers website - the discoteque project has a bespoke tire holder.

Okay, okay. I reread my original posting and maybe some of the verbage isn't perfect. (Which is funny since I'm a writer for a living.)

For the record: I never meant to give anyone the impression that I am out to crush Rovertym. I just want to make myself a frickin' tire mount and wanted a little input from anyone that had it. Being that RTE made one, I figured that was a good place to start.

Sorry this got so blown out of proportion. No hard feelings. Group hug in Moab.
