You'll need a big metric impact socket to remove the nut holding the steering arm. Also don't bother with anything short of a real pitman arm puller. When you tighten the puller and start worrying about stripping something, whack the drive bolt with a ballpeen hammer and it should pop loose.

When you are thru you will in all likelyhood have a steering wheel off center. This is a big source of trouble. If I understand correctly in the shop manual they say remove the steering wheel. Mine was off 10 deg and I simply moved the coupling at the input shaft to line it back up. I could do this cause the steering wheel and front wheels were never moved during the process. If things get off they say the airbag maybe affected.

Best tip- CLEAN HELL OUT OF ENTIRE AREA BEFORE YOU START!!! Man it's messy on a 100k + disco with a steering box that leaks like a pig.

BTW, you didn't say why you were replacing. Leaks, seizure, other?

leaks and seizure. steering is so stiff. I already did the pump. do you know what size the impact socket is by chance? how come you didn't adjust the drag link to re-center your steering wheel? yeah I am not looking forward to this job, I just cleaned my garage floor! tempted to have it done if it's not too much, we will see. did get a great deal on the meridian rebuilt box, $275 + $150 core + free shipping of core back.

Vortex, if I moved the draglink I would have had to start over. Since the wheels were straight and the steering wheel was staringt when I dismantled and the steering arm is indexed to the steering box output shaft, the only thing I had to change was the coupling. That way I didn't have to redo the front end alinement (not a big deal, a happy coincendence).

I bought used and after I had installed the unit I found the high pressure threads were cross threaded. Yes, I was pi__ed! It really only takes 20 mins to remove the box after you've just put it back. I'm sorry I know that. Then had to find an M16x1.5mm (don't quote me on that) to chase the threads. Bottom tap is reqd. After that it worked fine.

Use new hoses and, yes, check the threading before you put it back. BTW, the steering input coupling can be slid way up to clear the input shaft and is worth working at it.
