I have a 95 disco that has been a great vehicle for the past 5 years but recently when trying to start the car it doesnt send fire to the starter. I checked out the starter then replaced the ignition switch. This solved the problem for almost a week then the switch quit agian. I desided to bypass the switch by running a wire from the battery to a push button switch then to the solenoid. This starts my disco when the ignition is turned on and though it works I had rather it be done the right way. Does anyone know what else could cause the switch to quit?

If your starter is going out, it could be drawing excessive amperage and burning out the contacts in your OEM ignition switch. If you have a suitable amp meter you could check it. It shouldn't be more than 25-35 amps or you're ignition switch will likely not handle the current.

the starter seems to work fine, though I have replaced the solenoid. Should I check the amperage at the solenoid or the starter? Can I check the connections in the ignition switch in any way? Thanks for the info Shane.

I would want to know how much current is passing through the crank wire at the ignition switch. I would definitely check the connector at the ignition switch as well becuase if that is loose or damaged in any way the resistance will also cause excessive amperage and heat. Most likely, if the connector is bad you should be able to see something visually as they often melt and/or get deformed from the heat.
