I wonder why I seldom see Pelican Cases on the roofrack of a LR. Any reason? |

I suspect the reason is because Pelican cases are so expensive. Here are a few pics: http://www.expeditionexchange.com/dusy/DSC010556.jpg http://www.expeditionexchange.com/dusy/DSC010156.jpg http://www.expeditionexchange.com/dusy/DSC009166.jpg http://www.expeditionexchange.com/truckhaven2/DSC01593.jpg |

Chris, Do you mean like so: http://www.expeditionexchange.com/rubicon/DSC008046.jpg Looking at Michel's Disco, I don't know whether to be impressed or be scared. It's Pelican City inside his Disco, and he packs everything Tetris style with not a scintilla of wasted space. |

Kumbuya! Thats a packing job! No, on day trips recently, I usally only take 2 with me and maybe a third in the D90. For overnight or longer trips, the camping gear goes in the ones up on the roof rack and then I start loading more into the trucks. I think I still have one that I have never used yet but its good to have in case. Chris von C |

We fit 4 1650s tightly on our Brownchurch rack which is mounted to the LWB RR. No slip at all. Probably could get all 5 on the 109. Great product for traveling. Much better than the "tupperware" we used to pack. Jaime |

hehe, Yeah it took a while to come up with that system. Still a pain in the ass to get something out of them, but it's all in its place and tighly straped down. No gigling even on high speed dirt roads or offroading. For 2 people on long trips (2-3 weeks) we pack it all in there. The beauty here is only one of the 1650's needs to come out for staying in a hotel. One case for 2 people on wheels...it's amazing how the little things help at the end of the day. No more shitloads of stuff to unpack to go to bed. Michel |

lol Michel! We need 2 1650s just for an afternoon picnic! Seems like everyone in the family has to have their own whenever we go anywhere and that includes the Labs. Very addictive to have that much easy carrying capacity with a LR. Our flock really has organized our adventures. Jaime |

Blue, Pelican has an unconditional lifetime warranty on all of its products. I think in your case Pelican would just insert a new pin for you. If Pelican couldn't do that, then you'd get new case I would think. |

john, if you have any feed back at pelican , let them know i have 3 requests. 1) offset the latches. this is nice when i line two or more cases side buy side so the latches dont hit into each other. yes i know i can offset one of the cases, but i am OCD and i want it all neat and tidy, like my mullet. 2) mold a slot thru both lips of the case for a 1" strap, on the side case next to the newly improved offset latch would be a perfect spot. 3) full length piano hinge. if they would like to pay me for my ideas i'll take payment in the form of a 1650 case ;) rd |

Mullet. Thats a term I haven't heard in awhile. The last time I was in Athens, there was a barbar shop with one of those folding signs out front. It read "Haircuts: $6.00, Mullet Removal: $15.00" |

I have Anvil cases and am very pleased with them. Those with plywood bodies are indestructible. However, they are more expensive than even the Pelicans. The new ones will be built at home to the Anvil pattern. The only problem I have is that last night, I put a new handle on an Anvil case that was given to me. I was all set to use it to carry the GPS, maps and radios when wheeling, but I'm afraid it is now the wife's new laptop case. Sorry John, I might not be buying the Pelican laptop case for her for Christmas as she says she likes the Anvil better as it has a far more intense appearance. Paul |

http://www.uwkinetics.com/ I like the underwater kinetic cases. I have some of the smaller ones for my camera gear. A little overkill for a case that would located in a vehicle and they cost a little more than the pelican. |

Back to the original, I don't place my Pelican(s) on the roof largely because most of the stuff I keep in them is either too heavy to lift up there, or to heavy to be used on a roof rack (take your pick). I tend to keep all tools and spares, food and recovery equipment in mine. I try to store softer, lighter items like tents, sleeping bags, etc., up there. I'm a bit too weary of being top heavy, either on road or on the trail. |

Nadim, If memory serves, the two big black cases are 1650's. The three black, yellow, and orange cases are 1550's. And the small orange case on top is a 1400. |

That Underwater Kinetics website is very interesting. I couldn't help but be reminded of the movie Coming To America, where one of the characters ran that fake McDonald's called "McDowell's". That's what crossed my mind while looking at the UK website. I'm surprised this UK place adopted the name "Underwater Kinetics" instead of "Seabird" or something similar. I've also seen the UK cases at the local Sports Chalet. I think the Pelican cases are far superior to the UK cases. Just my opinion. |

i agree, as far for value is concerned the pelican line can't be beat. and there is also something to be said about being first to market. but i really like the 800 series (a friend has these for his digital camera equipment). UK used to only make dive lights and knives, the case business started a few years ago i think. |

I think the price on that kit was $6,000. (!) If you're still awake and haven't fainted, I think that kit is exclusively for the US Army. And I think the $6,000 price tag is the bulk/Army rate. And you thought Pelicans were expensive. |

Being a helicopter mechanic, I have a decent set of tools. It took me three years and $7k to fill a 12 drawer roll-a-way with Snap-On and Craftsman stuff. And you are never ever done buying tools. At the last place I worked, we had a Snap-On dude come by every Wednesday. It was funny to see him roll in and blow the horn because every mechanic would flock to his truck as if the Holy Grail itself were inside! He was like a crack dealer, except he had a credit card machine and a payment plan. Paul Confessed Snap-On addict |

Greg Bright, do you have a hard-cased Crafstman set? If so, here's a tip to stop some of the rattles. Worked for mine. Open the case and spread a layer of Saran wrap across the lower half. Spray a layer of the expanding plumber's foam over the wrap, and cover the foam with another layer of the wrap. Close your case and let it dry. Then, trim around the edges, and you have a foam filler that can be removed when using your tools. It took about 95% of the rattles out of my set. |

John, Are these 1600's or 1650's on Ho's rack? http://www.expeditionexchange.com/dusy/DSC009096.jpg I'm trying to figure out which one's I would want for my roof rack. Do both have wheels for rolling or just 1650? These look like great cases for airline travel too. I'd like to see Delta trash these! |

One more thing. Once you've closed your case, it may be too airtight for the foam to set up. If that's the case(no pun intened!), take a pin and poke small holes in the areas that haven't set up yet. That will allow enough air for the foam to dry. I'm so glad that others can benefit from me being so anal! |

http://www.expeditionexchange.com/dusy/DSC009096.jpg Greg, those are 1650's. Both Ho and I like the 1650's the best for general use. My other favorite cases are the 1600 and 1400. To my knowledge, there are only five Pelican cases with the wheels: 1610, 1620, 1650, 1660, 1700, and 1750. The 1700 and 1750 are dedicated gun cases. These are available in no-foam versions and suitable for general use as well, but I think these are best suited for gun use like so: http://expeditionexchange.com/pelican/DCP_0569.jpg http://expeditionexchange.com/shooting/NewPictures004b.jpg The 1610 and 1620 are similar in size to the 1600, but have the amenities of the 1650 such as the wheels, retracable pull handles, and large locking latches. The 1610 and 1620 are also taller than the 1600. I think Ax has a 1614 (1610 with padded dividers) and a 1609 (photographer's lid organizer) to hold his video camera equipment. This is the case that safeguards equipment used to film the DiscoWeb videos. The 1660 is a taller version of the 1650. This is a huge case and frankly I think it's a little too big. Even a 1650 case is seriously heavy when it's loaded. The case alone weighs about 25 lbs. and when it's loaded fully it's very difficult to lift into the truck. For roof rack use, I usually lift the 1650 onto the rack and then load it because it's so hard to lift a loaded case onto the roof rack. |

You may try this. If your LR Adventure roof rack has a flooring you can fit two jerry cans lying sideways in between two 1550's. Other option a 1650 sandwich between two jerry cans lying sideways. One more option one 1610 sandwich between two jerry cans lying flat. |
