I replaced my u-joints around Christmas time trying to dampen a vibration after lifting my Disco. I have put about 30K miles on it since and while returning from a trip, I notice a fairly intense thrumming vibration, felt in the seat of the truck. So, I dutifully replaced the rear driveshaft with one with a good bushing and u-joint (the roto looks fine!). No dice, minor vibes still there. So, last night, I crawl under my truck and the universals on the front driveshaft look like they have been puking grease out of the bearing cups... So, I grab the grease gun and waste a huge amount of time driving backward and forward to line the zerk up to where I can get to it (note to self-jack up truck next time). This morning, the vibration is there, but lessened. I tend to think this may reinforce my suspicion that I need new universals, but even given the lift (2" RTE CB) and the amount of wheeling I've been able to do (severallong weekends spent on the trails and a nine day marathon over July Fourth), I still think this is a short life for a pair of universals. What kind of life do you guys get from your universals? Paul |

Hey Paul, My front drive shaft self destructed after 27k. If you suspect it's going bad, replace it, ASAP. When mine shit the bed it took out my transmission, tranfer case and both cats. I have a OME 2" lift also...good news, after the dealer replaced everything(under warranty), I did a 7600 mile Trek across the US and Canada and didn't have any problems... Cheers, Frank |

Also check the bolts attaching the driveshafts to the tra.nny and diffs...a bad vibration on my lifted truck (GBR front driveshaft/ab rear) resulted after several minutes of looking puzzled until we spotted that two bolts at holding the front to the tra.nny box had loosened up and were close to saying sayonara. You can and I did fit longer bolts! Hah got past the discoweb censor by adding a . in the middle of ... darn it tra.nny! |

I recall someone was about to make some kind of drive shaft containment loop for when it does blast. Maybe one of these is already available - does anyone know? Dean |

Dean: Many aftermarket high performance shops make driveshaft loops-they're pretty simple, I've made several for drag cars after suffering failures. As for my current predicament, I will be replacing the front driveshaft this weekend, complete with new u-joints. As for the bolts attaching the driveshafts, I have never suffered this failure mode. I know of many who have had recurring problems-maybe I tighten mine up sufficiently! Peace, Paul |
