In my search for a welder to fix my exhaust manifold, a friend suggested that I try brazing the crack with bronze. He said that many times a welder will heat the manifold up so much that it has a good chance to warp. My goal here is to simply stop the spread of the crack, and to eliminate "the Rover Mower" noise (as my J@#p buddies call it). Will brazing the crack fill it permanently - in other words will it fall out with heating and cooling? Will it drip into the manifold like solder? Any other comments would be greatly appreciated... |

Chip, Brazing will fix the crack as long as it isn't too bad. Drill a 1/8" hole at each end of the crack. This is done so that it doesn't spread any further after the repair. Clean the surface of the crack very well. Cast is difficult to weld, and I am not sure if brazing it is any easier. The brazed surface of the manifold has to be postheated with the torch as you apply the brass rod. (Use a backhand motion.) Just a warning, it has been a while since I brazed so if anyone spots an error in what I wrote, please correct it. |
