ALL,

2000 DISCO II, 45K

EXHAUST MANIFOLD LEAK?

SYMPTOMS INCLUDE A LIGHT DIESEL-ESQE/PINGING TYPE SOUND ON ACCELERATION, CLEARLY COMING FROM THE ENGINE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. NO UNUSUAL SOUNDS AT IDLE. USING PREMIUM FUEL AND VEHICE HAS HAD EVERY SERVICE INTERVAL (DEALER).

I READ THE ARCHIVES ON THE BB AND THIS IS CULPRIT I'M FOCUSING ON.

QUESTION: HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO FIND WERE THE LEAK IS, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT CAN'T BE HEARD AT IDLE SPEEDS?

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP,

JEFF

Had a leak at the down pipe one time, but tightened the bolts and it went away.

Join the club. We have always heard ours at idle as well.
If you cover the exhuast with your hand (when cold) to create back pressure you should hear the noise loud and clear. Ours has just come back from the 4th manifold gasket (both left and right hand sides) repair in under 9 months.
One time it was so loud, the car sounded like it had serious mechanical failure.

I had the tank sound. Spent $130 on manifold gaskets and stud/nuts (for the engine block / cat). Labored for about 8 hrs(because the manifolds were being very very unfair).

Didnt fix the problem. Before you blame the manifold gaskets, please make sure you dont have an exhaust leak downline. Take it to midas and have them check it for free.

I had two leaks, one just below the center muffler. And I still have one on the left (as facing engine) right where it comes out of the manifold, the joint there before it pipes down to the cat. 102k miles.

I'm getting used to mine as well! Mine sounds like a diesel engine. I'll probably just buy the Tdi decals and replace my SD decals

Streak, just curious. If you have so many issues with your Rover, why don't you sell it?

I just had the exhaust manifold replaced. It had a small crack on the bottoom of the mainfold back near the fire wall. You could only see it when the truck was up on a rack and it appeared as a white powdery/chalky streak about 2" long. Truck was idling and running rough and the "Check Engine" light kept coming on at wierd times when I was 300 miles from home sort of thing. During a service the mech picked up on it and showed it to me. Truck has 108K miles
