I'm looking at the various different alternatives for a roof rack. I like the Safety Devices Expedition Rack the best. But they are an ocean away and not the least expensive option. Has anyone out there purchased and installed this rack? If so was it a good experience? Did everything fit right? What was the level of quality? Was Safety Devices easy to deal with? What was the cost of shipping? |

The Safety Devices rack, i.e. LR Adventure Rack is one and the same. Safety Devices made them for LR for the camel trophy trucks and later found their way to production models. If you're getting it from the dealer, it'll cost you at least $1100. Several aftermarket vendors like Discount Rovers and Rover Connection carry them for a few hundreds less. Check the classifieds in this BB as sometimes people sell them there. I got mine about a year ago for less than half of the new brand new price. eBay is also a good source. Check the photo galleries for pics. Most of the Discos here are using them. Goodluck! -glenn |

I have 2 SD expedition racks in stock for the D1. They are not the same as the Adventure/Highlander Rack. Abby's #1 is the expedition and #2 is the Advenure/Highlander David |

Aaron, Go to his website at http://www.thatchedroofgarage.com/ and follow the link to the "Safety Devices" page. But, if I remember, you'll have to email for the Adventure roofrack price.... The Safety Devices Highlander roofrack is the same rack as the LRNA Adventure roofrack. LRNA has their own Expedition roofrack that is bolt-together, which is different from the Safety Devices Expedition roofrack, which is of welded construction. If the wife would let me put a roofrack on her Disco, it'd have the Expedition one up there..... someday, once it's mine, heh heh..... Desert Dawg, FYI, Thatched Roof Garage is the US dealer for Safety Devices.... if you call SD, they'll send you back to David.... (you can find his email off of his website, or from his post above...). -L |

Dear roofrack lovers, the rack pictured in 1) is the same design as used in the camel trophy discos. with the difference of being mounted on the gutters instead of "thru-roof-into-internal-rollcage" like in the CT discos. i particularly like the 1) for the mounting position of the lights. they are recessed being well protected. but i dislike the overall height. i find it way too tall. the rack pictured in 2) is the normal ordinary LRNA rack that is available thru your dealers for a miserable price tag of about 1K. hope this clears any confusion. abby. |

Leslie, Thanks for the info. To answer others, yes it is the Expedition rack (Camel Trophy Style) which I am interested in. I know it is quite ugly compared the the LR highlander design, but I will be actually using the roof rack quite a bit. I'm throwing 400-600lbs up there and hitting some bumpy roads. My experience in the past has been that most racks are adequate on the highway, but when you hit the bumpy stuff... that's when rails pop off and gutter clamps slip around. A few things I have noticed in the pics that have caught my attention, the Expedition seems to have more gutter clamps than the others, a sturdy floor, and rails high enough to keep the load from landing on the windshield or hood. One more question though, is the material and construction as sturdy as it looks? Will a low hanging tree branch rip the rails off? Could a fellow throw a leg over the rail and hoist himself on top to access the load? |

IMHO, the Safety Devices are as sturdy as most people would ever think about needing... the rain gutters will go before the rack will in most cases. Completely indestructible? No, but likely to escape unscathed? Yes. Well, unless you park in parking garages that are too low... they won't hold up too well against low-lying concrete beams. -L |

DesertDawg, I recently purchase a Safety Devices rack from David and the quality is top rate. I fabricate most of my stuff, but I couldn't match this so I just bought one. HIGHLY recommended. If you bend your rack, I'd think you'd have other issues to consider, 'cause it's VERY beefy. |
