Hello, I'm a former D-90 owner (don't ask). I loved the truck, and I hated it. I loved it for its capabilities - it was perfect for me in so many ways. I hated it for the exhausting highway noise, since I had to drive it 8 or more hours to get to my prefered off-road locations. I've been suffering an itch to get some kind of truck again, but for various reasons I do not feel inclined to hunt down a used D-90 (in the U.S.). After test driving some lesser brands, I recently drove a 2003 Disco, which felt familiar in some ways. Way bigger, much heavier, less ground clearance, huge overhangs, bigger gas tank (thank goodness), too cushy but I'm sure much more quiet, etc. The sales-person clearly sold these things to soccer moms, as he didn't know (or lied) about the fact that there was no center differential lock! That, alone, about vaporized any hope of my purchasing one, but still I found myself looking the truck over and wondering how I might kit the thing out. I know I can purchase an older model that still has CDL, and with a shorter rear overhang, but I would rather purchase a new(er) vehicle. So, on to my questions: What will it take to fit the same tires / get about the same ground clearance as a D-90. OME springs only? A body lift too? I've seen a front bumper, but is there a rear bumper available that will help with the rear overhang? What else would be necessary to convert a new(ish) Disco to catch up, to the degree possible, with the capabilities of a stock D-90, and how close could one get? Finally, the big one: Can a former D-90 man learn to love a Disco? |

sounds like you are in the "been there done that" stage as far as D90s go. if that is the case, i see possible love developing between you and a nice 98-99 disco1. |

If you are talking about fitting the D90 stock 265/75 size tires to a Disco, I think you would be best served with putting on the OME lift. SG, TReK Outfitters, and TJM make rear bumpers for Discos. Stop by and check out Expedition Exchange's site. They have a great section with a write up and pictures on the TJM rear bumper. Chris von C |

I'm gonna side w/ Ho here.... find a Series I Disco, ie, '98, give or take a year. I think it may be a good fit for you.... Or, a early DII, '99 through mid-'01, one that can have to CDL fitted. A DI can fit 245/75R16 w/o any lift... swap in 2" springs and 235/85R16 are easy enough... you can go bigger, just needs more attention (see the Tire&Wheel page in the "tech" section in the links at the top of the page). A DII, 265/75R16 is easy enough w/ a 2" lift, too.... There are better rear bumpers, such as TJM's rear bumper for the DI (DII is on the way), but they don't really help with the overhang... they just hold up better to being drug around... I think you need to drive a Disco off-road stock and see what you think... A talented driver in a Disco would do better than a novice in a Defender... A Disco isn't evenly "matched" against a D90, but it isn't that greatly handicapped either. Ah, I see Chris' has replied.... Oh! Also, I've yet to verify myself, but, supposedly the '03 can now have the CDL added... although it's not a factory option yet this year, the transfer case "should" be able to have the linkage added... hopefully this will be verified soon.... FWIW... -L |

JM, I know you said you want a newer model, but if you plan on outfitting for offroad, you really should consider a Disco series 1, it has several off-road advantages over a disco II: 1) much better departure angle (although even a D1 has the big-ass problem) 2) (I believe) better approach and break-over angles too 3) cdl (although this can be retrofitted in SOME DIIs) 4) if you are going to put lockers in, I would prefer lockers only to locker/ETC combo (before you DII guys get upset, this is not because I have any objective evidence one is better than the other, just that I have a strong personal bias towards simplicity in my off-road vehicles) 5)less luxurious, more utilitarian 6) as stated above: simplicity Another consideration for me (although perhaps not for you, JM) is the price. A solid D1 can be had for as little as 10K, and even less in some cases. Think of the mods you can do with the money you would save. In my opinion the off-road advantages a DII has over a DI are: 1) ETC: this is a nice and very effective system and I believe makes a DII more capable than a D1 in stock form in some situations, but if, as you stated you do, you intend to modify the vehicle I think it only complicates things and I personally prefer CDL/lockers to CDL/lockers/ETC. 2) Larger wheel wells. This is nice, can't deny it. But if you really are going to be off-roading a lot and doing mods, a sawzall/dremel/tinsnips/whatever can solve this problem with a D1 and depending on your desire to do it right, can even be done in a way which is not unsightly. just my 2 cents, not trying to get the dI/dII debate going again. -Marc |

Hey speaking of rear bumpers, of the ones that was mentioned (TJM, SG, Trek), which one is probably the best one of the lot ($$ included). I've seen them all and am leaning towards the TJM but just wondering what you guys thought. A |

Hello, Thanks for the responses. The D-90 isn't a "been there, done that" thing for me. I loved its raw simplicity, it was just the right size, and it went where I wanted it to go. There's some pain involved, but if I could buy one new, I'd still be sorely tempted. I'm not into adding stuff or seriously modding a truck. I'm more into subtracting stuff (weight, things that I don't need and will just break). The stock D-90 was well balanced, and I felt no need to upgrade its capabilities. My only mods were to permanently remove the rear seats, remove all the carpeting in favor of rubber, and I spent a huge amount of effort in sound deadening. If I got a Disco, I would want to choose the model that is already the closest to my needs, and only mod that which was necessary to bring it to an acceptable level. I consider the CDL to be mandatory. Although I've been in some hairy situations, I'm not into severe rock crawling, and the CDL was normally all I needed. I haven't seen the ETC in action. Maybe I would like it, but somehow a tricked-out anti-lock brake system doesn't sound as good to me as the traditional CDL. My preference is to have the largest tires (within reason) with the least lift. The D-90's ~32 inch tires did very well. A D-II that will fit the same tires with only an OME kit sounds good. By the way, did D-II's come with springs all around? I absolutely do not want an air-bag system. I also appreciate that the D-I was the most utilitarian. I guess I would worry about age and milage, and I would not be interested in breaking out the sawz-all. Buying a D-III (2003, whatever it's called) would be the most insane, though I can afford it if that's what I wanted. How's the noise level on D-I,II,III? I have tinitis and the D-90 was murder on my ears. I'll do some more research. Cheers! |

Just Me, if you want to see what can be done to a DII, look in my gallery. I also manufacture rear bumpers for them that help with the rear departure angle. The ETC system works very well with the True Trac LSD's. It makes the TT's invisible, as the computer will apply the brakes as soon as wheel spin is detected, causing the TT to engage. A very effective combination. Mine is an '00, so I have the CDL capability. Not sure if the '03's have the CDL stud or not. You'd hve to crawl under it to find out. With a few well thought-out mods, a DII can be a very capable trail vehicle and still pamper you during the week. |

what i meant by "been there done that" statement isn't related to off-roading at all. most people will admit that the D90 is one of the coolest vehicles one can own. but after you owned one, you realize that you are now ready for some more "usable" vehicle... ya dig? |

so what's the verdict on the 2003? Does this thing have factory-equipped CDL, hidden CDL capability that can be home-rigged, or is it totally lacking? If this guy liked the simplicity & utility of his 90, I don't think he'd like the bells & whistles needed for the DII's & the new model's "magic traction"

i parked next to a new '03 yesterday at a brewpub in town. it was 'nice', but i was still happy to be climbing into my '96 when i got back to them in the lot. lots of fluff on those new ones. guess i am just getting old. lol. but then again i wouldn't mind having a '03 for my daily cruiser or road trip car. bet they are buttery nice kicking on the roads. can't wait to see some in town with 20" dubs on them. bling bling. |

Just Me, you can fit 32 inch tires on a DI with just an OME (or rovertym) 2 inch lift they just won't be as wide as stock D90 32s, the magic size is 235/85-16 |

Disco 03 = Absolutly no CDL nor capabilities. I have one and called the service manager he said that he heard that they may bring the CDL back but could not confirm it and said that I would have to get a new TC to have it if they came back. I asked because I wanted to know if I could limp the 03 out of the bush if something were to happen to the front or rear drive line. He said I would have to call LR for a tow, lets hope I have cell coverage! RT |

FWIW, Even though I have a D2. I recommend looking at the later D1 model years. Why? Well; Cost, CDL, 6" less ass hanging out than the D2 and there is more aftermarket stuff out there for the D1's. The cool thing about the Disco (1or2,) is the quieter ride, the ability to haul lots of crap, and longer driving range. Before you make a final decision, take a look at a 90's era Rangie. Hi folks, Someone mentioned earlier on this board that D1's have "the big-ass problem". What exactly does that mean? If D1's have that problem, doesn't that mean the DIIs have that problem too? Aren't DII's essentially the same as D1's dimention wise, except 6" longer? I'm new fairly new to LR(bought mine last Feb) so just trying to learn new stuff. A |

Hi all. Philip: I had a D-90 Station Wagon. Noisy as heck. At 75 (about top speed) the wind noise drowns out the loud transmission moan, the rear windows rattle like crack-addled monkeys are beating on them, the top does a booming base-drum immitation, and the door tops open a half inch while trying to get sucked off the car.... Ho: I understand. Except for the highway noise and tiny gas tank, I found the D-90 to be quite practical - as a two-seater, that is. What I meant was that my reason to not get another is unrelated to the features of the truck (not very explanatory, I know). Carter: thanks for the tip about the magic tire size for the D-I's. I do mostly rocky desert stuff, and floatation usually isn't very important. With those wheels, the standard CDL and "less ass" of the D-I, it's looking more attractive, I admit. Getting one cheap that I can beat up without worries sounds good, too. But another important question: Do they have disk brakes on all four wheels? That's important to me. Leslie: I'd like the 4.6, too. Nice engine (300 ft-lbs torque) given the extra 600+ lbs over a D-90. Too bad (Ross) they say there's no CDL capability at all. If it's truly gone, then I don't believe for a second that they will bring it back. Alen: They meant that the rear of the truck sticks out a whole lot and can easily scrape the ground when going up or coming off a hill, etc. The D-II's are worse. Cheers! |

Ahhh. Thanks JM. I understand now. I popped a bumper cover off not too long ago. Probably my fault anyway. I think I came out of a ditch a bit too quick. But I'm looking at a TJM bumper now so that shouldn't be a problem anymore even though they're a bit longer. Thanks again. A |

Hi Ho, I saw your web site. I just wanted to mention that I've been to Black Rock many times. It's one of my favorite places. I've been there in my old D-90, pulling lesser vehicles out of the mud, and in my old Porsche, doing 165 mph runs with a rooster of dust 10 miles long. The last time I was there, my gal and I had the most terrifying night in our experience. We were tent camping when the worst electrical storm I've ever seen hit us. Lightning was blasting at us literally 100 feet away and our hair was standing on end. Fires started in the brush (we were in the low hills just off the Playa) all around as well. We felt very, very lucky not to get hit. Wild! Cheers! |

Alan: Did a Block heater come standard with your disco or was one put in? My Chicago 03 special with the cold climate package didn't come with one (must have been the COOL weather and not the COLD package). Being a Canuk (fron N. RT, You betcha. I don't think they can sell them here without block heaters...or rather no one would buy them. By my Disco was originally from Toronto. It was driven (never been off-road) by a LR exec before he swapped it for a newer one so the Edmonton dealership bought it to sell here. But yes it did come with a block heater. The cold climate package DIDN'T come with a bh?? That's kinda odd...what's the cold climate package then? I wouldn't risk it RT. Get a bh...you'll thank yourself when it's -30C and blizzarding. Alan, I will have to get one, I just don't like not having the option of plugging the Land Ho in. Haven't had a problem here in Chicago with the ford the last 2 years. (at the worst winter's are like late November early December up in Edmonton, Kinda nice ) But I will be moving to northern Mochigan and I may need it the odd winter night up there. RT, Ya, I'd be safe and get a bh. Can't be too prepared. Either that or buy a hibatchi and stick it under your truck every morning! I also switched to synth-oil and it's made a world of difference. I did that in my Pathfinder and was amazed at the difference. With natural oil before, I HAD to plug in during winter or I'd have a hard time starting the next day if it got cold. After I switched to synth-oil, I couldn't believe the difference. I forgot to plug in a couple times in -30C weather and the darn thing started up easily. Since I got my D1, I've switched to synth-oil. Over the last couple years, I've noticed that we're guaranteed at least 2 weeks of -30+C weather. I can't wait to get a garage for my Disco next year (just have to make sure the door is tall enough to fit my truck with a safari rack on it)...but more than anything, I'm looking forward to snow this year. Just got some BFG ATs and can't wait to test them out. I'm sure I'll be the popular one in my neighborhood when we get a blizzard and people need tows. Nice chattin' RT. If you ever find yourself in the Edmonton/Alberta are with your Disco, let me know. A |

Hi RT, Alberta Safari Club has land out by Elk Island Park, 1 hour southeast of Edmonton. It's a big piece of land with about 75 kms worth of trails (all treed) ranging from novice to expert and a trial course. I have some pictures from there. I'll post them here when I get a chance and if they have a website, I'll post the address. There's also another place on the westend of they city on an Indian reserve. I know a few guys who go there too. I've never been there but it's supposed to be pretty good. Then, you have the Rocky Mountains. There are places out by Edson that you can go. It's anywhere from 2 - 3 hour drive depending on whether you take the "paved" route or the "fun" route. Funny thing is the "fun" route is the shorter of the two. The guys from the Alberta Safari Club maintain some of the trails out there so they go on expedition weekends every once in a while. Out by Calgary, you have places like Bragg Creek and McLean Trails that I heard are pretty good. I've never been to either but I'm guessing Milan has been there or knows about them. I'm guessing there's lots of them around. Just have to ask around to find them. I'm still pretty new to this stuff so lots to learn. A |

I lived in Cow Town so I was always in bragg and McLean creek. They are fun but like evry other place in Alberta the real fun starts when the gumbo comes out with a light rain Those were in my Ford Ranger days. My first job when I worked for Seisland Surveys was in Edson, I was there for three monthes Dec,Jan,Feb, and it was but cold, and at -47 deg celcius I blew up 2 sets of the automatic POS hubs within 5 days on my Ranger before they would put the manuals on. While out west (6yrs) I worked in N. BC, Sask and all Alberta. http://www.seisland.com/fieldmappingservices.asp} That's me at bottom right Ross Thoma |

Yes, all of the DIs have disc brakes at all four corners. The reason why the CDL "might" be doable: in the rest of the world, the CDL has returned to the Disco. It would be impractical to have two different transfer cases when you could have one transfer case and then just leave the extra linkage out, or not. The early '03 ones in the US don't have them, but eventually, they probably will have the nut so that the CDL could be added the way the early DIIs can have it added. A clean '95 or '96 can be found for $8k.... |

Just Me, I think a newer DI is the perfect choice for you. It has the cdl there, you don't have to fiddle around. Upgrading the suspension will get you into those bigger tires you want, it will also give you a better feel on the road. I would recommend some rocksliders. "Can a D-90 man learn to love a Disco?" NO! Water flows downhill not uphill Now a Discoman can easily learn to love a D-90 Going from a 90 to disco is like dumping the old wife of many years for the young college girl. Yeah the new trim and fit feels great at first, but you will soon be longing for the simpler, older design that requires less maintenance |

Hello Friends, I've spent much more time researching and I'm feeling depressed. I've looked at some used D-I's, just to get a feeling for them. Some of you know that dealers rarely carry D-I's in their used stock, but my local one had a few in the back ready to be shipped off to L.R. for auction. Though younger than my D-90 was, and with similar miles, they were trashed inside and out. I'm sure I could find one that was pampered, if I looked long and hard enough. Still, it was a discouraging feeling. My D-90 was not a reliable vehicle. When I look under a truck and find virtually every engine and drive-train seal leaking, I do not find it comforting. When half the trim in a truck with 60k miles on it is broken or falling off, it's not comforting. The D-III is an attractive new vehicle, but with ~800 lbs more weight and the other known deficiencies, I cannot see using and abusing it off road. What I'm afraid is that the D-III is L.R.'s last gasp, at least in the States, with a vehicle that at all lives up to its prior reputation. With the next iteration, like the current range-rover and the Freelander, that reputation is likely to be maintained as a marketing illusion and little more. Moe's last post is what I have worried about for a long time - that moving from a D-90 to a Disco would be a dubious step backwards. As much as I would like to return to the L.R. family, I'm not so sure I could without another D-90. For ~5 years now, L.R. has had a vehicle (Defender) it could, with some effort, import to the U.S. if they desired, even if only as a loss-leader. If they brought them back, people would line up for them. It's true they only sold a few thousand a year, but how many Hummers are sold? How many of those G-wagons? When the last L.R. with a low-range transfer case passes and all their "off-road" capability is dependent on a tricked-out anti-lock brake system, what will L.R. have left of its prized heritage? Their ability to leak fluids? It's obvious that L.R. is not alone in this trend. Jeep has also realized that marketing is more important than real capabilities, and that few purchase their trucks for reasons other than image. Yet they recently introduced their most capable jeep ever (Rubicon), which are essentially sold out for the year after only a month or two on the market. A Wrangler is not a D-90, though. What will L.R. do, eventually introduce an IFS Ford with "retro" D-90'ish styling for the mass market mall runners? Ironically, there was a D-90 on their lot. It was a customers car there for service. It obviously had never - not once - been off-road. It made me sad and angry. As I said, I'm feeling depressed about all this - sorry! Cheers. |

A few insights on the d1 vs d2...I am 6'4" with more body height then leg height if you know what I mean....anyway, I used to drive an old girlfriends 97 D1, and the most annoying feature in that truck was a very low bolster along the top of the windshield. It caused me to try to squirm down in the seat to look out under it. This was resolved in my '99 D2, and was enough to work for me. So if you are tall, the D1 might not please you. By the way, you can fit 32" 2657/75/16's on the D2 also with a 1.5" lift. I think the best answer Just Me is to drive a Disco offroad sometime, to see how it feels. If it were as good as a D90 there would be no need to love a D90! |

Rans, Along those lines..... At MAR, one before this just past one, I was about to go out on a trail run, w/ a buddy from there at camp who is a Series owner. Two other fellas, D90 guys, camping near us asked if they could hop in back and ride along.... So, we're running up the hill-climb, they start saying things like, "Wow! This thing is an off-roading Barcalounger!" "This is MUCH more comfortable than your Defender off-road!" "Why am I putting up with driving hundres of miles in a Series to get here when a Disco can get me here and still go offroading?" Don't misunderstand me, a Series is a LOT of fun, and I'd love to have a Defender, too. But, if you have to have just one, a Disco is great at being a jack-of-all-trades. IMHO, FWIW, YMMV..... -L |

Just Me, Don't know how feasible this is although with the exchange rate the way it is, it might be, but have a look in Canada for D1s. There seem to be a fair amount of them and for the most part, the ones I've seen are very well kept. If you want more info, email me and I can probably put you in touch with someone here that can help you. A |

The height thing can be overcome by a really good wax job on the hood. You can then watch the lights change in the reflection. Ask me how I know... I also sat in a D2. I'd have to move the seat back to be comfortable in it. Todd (also 6'4") |

Just do it already

I've got to tell you that we couldn't be happier with our 2001 D2 SD (that stands for 'stripped down'). It is perfect for our needs. Got a low milage (9000 miles) with plenty of factory warranty, and Rover extended warranty for a couple of years after that. Perfect, like new, inside and out. It is an early (3/01) 2001, and had the CDL nut. I've already installed the AMV actuator. It is comfortable, and with the new Goodyear MT/R's (255x70x16's) it does all we have guts for, and more, off-road. We've put the first tree/rock scratches in it, but got it cheap enough (compared to a new one) so that it was not too painful. We looked at and drove ALL other comparable vehicles, bet kept coming back to the Disco as the only choice for our needs (80% recreation, 20% road). Just my opinion. John F |
