Hey guys. I just noticed when i take my foot off the accelerator and then quickly accelerate there is a heavy clunking sound just before acceleration. It only happens if my foot is taken completely off the accelerator before hitting the gas. I don't hear it if i just drop the pedal while I am cruising along. Seems louder the quicker I hit it. I presume it is from the drivetrain (Noob mechanic obviously) but just want to make sure this is a normal sound for an automatic and not something I need to worry about. Thanks for any advice guys.

seems to be pretty 'normal' on most discos. my '96 still does and my '94 did back then too. pretty common to hear this post on the board. from park to reverse is pretty loud too. i feel like i am driving a john deer at times. haha

That is good news. I have posted a few things about the weird noises haha. New to the whole hydraulic and automatic thing. My 1966 MGB makes very few of these modern sounds (at least when it actually starts - damn British wiring harnesses haha). Thanks again guys.

Hey Jason,

Yep, hear it too. Don't notice it if I ease off the pedal gently but if I just let go, I hear it occassionally.

How you liking your Disco so far? What year is it?

It is normally due to slack in the drive train, typically backlash in the diffs. The clunk will become more substaintial over time and can lead to drive train failure, typically the shaft through the spider gears gives up. If it becomes really bad I suggest you consider getting the diffs re-setup to reset the backlash etc. I left mine till it became really noticable and ended up replacing the rear diff.

Alan - So far I love the new truck. I got a pretty good deal on a 2000 SE7. Found someone trading it in for a new RR. She had put 19000 km on it and it has never been offroad (YET). It has the performance package and all the trimmings. Still getting used to it and trying to figure out all the little details but very excited. Hoping to get a few photos up some time soon. Anyone in the Ottawa/Toronto area interested in introducing me to some local trails?

Hey Jason,

Good to hear. When I was first looking at LR's I was a bit leary because of all the reliability problems I kept hearing about but I did my research and settled on a 98 D1. I've been really happy with it so far but find myself spending more money on my Disco than I did on my previous truck (89 Pathfinder), not because of mechanical problems but because of mods & accessories I want to put on my truck. I'm not as frequent a wheeler as a lot on this board so I'm just looking to make a few key mods that will make a the biggest impact but I like tinkering. :)

If you ever find yourself in Alberta, look me up. Some are pretty remote. The one I went on a month ago had the same trip planned last year and some guy got attacked by a bear. Accidental of course. The guy was scouting a trail and didn't see the bear sleeping under a brush and startled it as he walked by. He was ok but we were better prepared this year for bears. :)

Alan - Yikes. Don't see many bears out here. Used to run into the odd black bear in BC but not too much to worry about out here (coyotes are about the meanest). I am pretty much in the same situation as you. I am looking to do some simple but useful mods for the times I want to go on trails, but mostly the truck serves for commutes and daily work. What part of Ab you in? My wife is from Calgary and we head that way every now and then.

Jason,

I'm from Edmonton but go to Calgary several times a year for work. I think there's about 3 guys from Calgary on this board. I know a couple Defender guys in Edmonton that go wheelin'. One uses his 94 D90 usually for hunting but I'm trying to convince him to just go for fun (I also have my eye on his truck...his wife wants him to sell it :)). The other guy has a Disco, Rangie and 18 Defenders (only one of them runs but he builds his own trucks). He's game to go anytime. The third guy has a 94 D90. Sounds like he goes a lot.

Rockies around here do have bears (blackies and grizzlies) but if you go at the right time, you're ok. Bears aren't the ones you have to worry about though. It's the cougars. :( Moose aren't too friendly either.

Jason, if the clunk is really loud and you can "feel" it, make sure that your engine and transmission mounts are very tight. In my Disco the engine mounts where loose and the clunck went away when I got them tightened. Hope it helps.

Jason,

FWIW, I had the loud clunk as well. After replacing my '94 Disco's t-case with a '98's, the clunk went away. So did the relatively loud whine. Of course, I wouldn't recommend replacing the t-case just because of the clunk. Up until a mishap with my t-case, it had worked flawlessly, on and off the road. Again, FWIW...
