Just got back from 200+ mile dirt road excursion to reach west end of Grand Canyon - some great trails down there!

Want to do a light pressure wash under hood to remove the thick coat of dirt covering everything. Any precautions I shoud take? Do I need to plastic-wrap anything?

Thanks-

I leave the engin running, keep the nozel back and then drive it long enough to make sure the excess water has dried, also crack the bonnet at home and let the convection from the engine get rid of the moist air from the compartment.

I'd advise against washing down your engine when it is hot (running or no). Cracked blocks, heads, and manifolds can result. The differences in the temperatures are simply too extreme. You can also cause electrical shorts. Having said that, having the engine running is better than shutting it off (at least the cooling system has a chance to equalize the temperatures).

The safest way to wash your engine is to let the engine cool completely. Then spray it down. I bought a small insecticide sprayer for this purpose. Using car washing detergent, I spray everything down. I wait a few minutes (enough time to drink a glass of 'tea') and then rinse it down with a hose. I rarely use a pressure sprayer.

Thanks,

Well, I let it run while giving a quick high pressure spray, then let it run a while. No apparent problems. /thanks for the advice...

you've got lucky, John.

the ECM in the discos (at least on D1s, don't know about the D2) has NO waterproofing. Nada. a little overspray from a pressure washer, and you're hosed in multiple and strange ways.

Uh, I'm no expert, but I think the ECM is under the drivers seat on D2s. I didn't spray under there
