I have 98 DI w 82k that is leaking oil from the passenger side above the manifold. I had the lifters replaced at the dealership and they replaced all gaskets and seals block up. My question is I cannot pinpoint the location of the leak, if it is comming from the gasket or is the head cracked? Could someone who is famillar with this problem let me know. The engine runs fine no loss of power etc. Just the smell of burnning oil on the manifold.

my dealer mechanic said not to worry about my valve cover gasket leak. said unless I was really bothered by it, I should leave it alone, as it isn't hurting my landie.

unless you have copious amounts of oil don't worry about it.

I'm guessing that once you have enough oil on the manifold it won't really burn like that.

Have you tried re-torquing the valve cover bolts? I'm guessing that it's just that gasket, if you had a cracked head you'd be leaking compression or sucking water, probably both, and drivability would be suffering.

Otherwise, don't refer to it as a leak, it's just an automatic, self-lubricating feature.

That's what I have heard. I always thought it was to resist corrosion. Thanks for the help guys will try to re torque the valve cover...

needs 8mm 12 point SMALL socket to get at the bolt head... not that common.

Jim hit the nail on the head. Mine was leaking and I just assummed the bolts were tight. WRONG.

That is part of the anti-corrosion system for the engine block. Remember, if a Land Rover stops leaking it ran out of fluid

The only time I took my truck to the dealership was for replacement of the cranking motor (dealership as I was in Detroit on business, long story). Anyway, they told me in no uncertain terms that the reason my cranking motor had died was due to the oil leaking from mainly the valve cover gaskets.

Don't overlook the possibility that a minor leak today won't cause catastrophic losses next week.

We laugh about the oil leaks, but in reality, if you work at it, you can reduce the incidence and magnitude of these leaks pretty effectively.

That said, I'm down to my last major engine leak, front cover crank seal.

DChrismon - what did it run you to have all that done at the dealership?? I am looking to do the same and the quotes are off the charts at different places.

Well it all started when I bent an exhust valve last spring. Took it to the dealer the tech new what it was before he even did a compression test. Well did the test found out #8 cylinder no compresion. So when I found out it was going to cost $2200 went and sold a kidney to do the work since this is my only vehicle. What they did was replace all gaskets head up updated valves that will not collect carbon as bad and foul like the old ones. It was a very extensive job. After what the tech told me that he has done many of these I told him that it LR should do a damn recall. Oh well she runs fine now.

As common as this valve replacement procedure is, I am beginning to wonder if this is Rover's "cure for whatever ails you". This new valve job is great if you are still under warranty, but IMHO they are doing this WAY too much. The post above does not help my paranoia.
