Stock 2000 D2, 45K Here are the clues...can you name that sound? Hearing a light dieseling/pinging sound on acceleration only. It is not a "ticking" sound. Reminicent of the sound a diesel engine would make but much lighter sounding. Absolutely no problems/sounds at idle, in fact the engine sounds great and smooth. Noise is coming from engine area and seems to be more evident on the driver side. Using premium fuel and all maintenance intervals done. LR dealer says they do not hear anything unusual (should I be suprised?) although I hear it and it is driving me crazy!!!! Help! Signed, Obsessed About Engine Noise |

sounds like a manifold leak to me, get used to the noise or get used to bringing the truck into the shop a bunch. |

From one obsessive to another, I've heard something of the kind from my brand-new truck. I was told to make sure I had good gas. But I'd also check the manifold gaskets - the '95 Discovery I used to drive had that problem and the noise baffled me for some time. |

buying premium and getting premium can be two different things. in some areas investigations by the state and local tv reporters have shown that premium fuel is almost all bullshit unless you get it from a major vender that hauls there own fuel such as mobil or shell does here in chicago. i'm lucky I have a pre gems truck so I retarded my dizzy and I cfan run whatever shit comes outa the pump. |

Jeff E, I have a DII (65,000 kms) and have the same symptoms. I was told by LR that this is normal, it is the noise made by the pistons resonating through to the driving compartment, and that i should not worry. I have been driving my rig for about 12,000 kms since hearing the noise, and she performs well. I did some investigations myself. I sat in some DII's at the dealer, and revved the engines past 2000rpms and in 2 of the 3 DII's i heard the same noise, as mine made. I think it is the way of the truck. Also obsessed about the noise, but less anxious these days. |

Jeff, A couple of questions, have you had you rockers rebuilt ? And is the sound more pronouced when you first fire it up and drive off ? and it is more pronouced with lower ambient temps ? The reason I ask the last two is that my wifes (37/8K)D2, which I listen to all the time and very closely...every morning when she starts it back out of the garage and tramps of the gas to go up our steep driveway, it sounds a wee bit dieselesque. As the engine warms up to temp the dieselesque sound dies to less than a whimper. The only thing i find a little odd is that it doesn't smoke during this process. I have a 72 911T (all illumnum motor) that smokes and sounds very dieselesque until warmed up. It is acually normal for that little pig. I'm in your area, if you want to drop down I'll give it a listen and looksee....FWIW |

Todd, Thanks for the input. To answer your questions; the rockers have never been touched and (knock on wood) no problems with the engine at all (40K). No smoke problems either. As mentioned before, no sounds when starting or at idle (in park or neutral). I did note that when the vehicle is shifted into gear I can begin to hear the noise (very slight) at the idle rpm. I would agree with you that it sounds "worse" when the engine is cold and improves when warm (although I can still hear it). Colder weather: When I took it out last night 48-50 degrees, it seems as if the dieselesque noise was more apparent than during the hot summer days. Jury is still out on this because I am not sure if I am "paying more attention" to it now. What are your thoughts on the rockers? Have you had yours back to LR for this problem? Have you had any issues with exhaust maniford gasket leaks, exh. manifold cracks or exhaust pipe leaks on yours? Might be a worthwhile for a looksee. Thanks, Jeff |

Well the rockers make a top end noise that is more tinny (if thats a word)whereas the deiselesque noise is deeper almost like the beginning of a rod knock....anyway to answer your questions. Yes I have had mine in for (both sides) rocker rebuild @ 15k. Yes LR did the replacements under warranty. No...most fortunately, I have not had problems with the exhaust manifolds etc...I have however had some manifold/exhaust problems recently with some of my other rollong stock. What you described may be a manifold/gasket or the flange/flange gasket where it connects to the downpipe. These thing are typically louder on a cold motor, then as it heats up and the metal expands they tend to quiet down (somewhat). Also, when you put the car in drive or reverse, the motor will rock over slightly in the motor mounts and aggrevate (make more noticable) manifold gasket leaks and leaks at the manifold/downpipe connection. I live out by Hartefeld GC and I'll be around the house Sat. wrestling with the wiring on my car trailer. I'd be glad to lend an ear and/or an eye to it. If we can put our finger on it..it should be covered under warranty. |

I have driven my '96 8k miles since buying it and it seems to have the same sound. I always run premium and have changed the oil twice with Mobil 1 Synthetic and I cannot get rid of the sound. I thought if it did happen to be a rod knocking then the Mobil 1 would help it (didn't change). It may be the valves ticking, I am tempted to run a little regular petrol in it to see if the noise gets worse, if so I may just need to adjust the valves. I am not around enough other discos to see if they have the same symptoms but apparently its not uncommon. |
