The multimount system, I guess you get a crossmember that you can mount on the front, so you can keep the winch inside until you need it then put it on front OR back. Seems pretty valuable to me. http://www.warn.com/InternetHome/products/MountSystem/Multi-Mount.shtm Comment, please!

Sometimes you can't put it on when you need it. It should be put on before you hit the trail. Also, the mount utilizing two receivers is better. But like Ho says, better than no winch at all. |

Another idea that would be ok for emergency winchings would be one of those heavy duty hand winches (black rat type, for example, which is what I have, and boy has it saved me a few times). Coz you're gonna loose a lot of ground clearance with that hanging out up front. Or what are you gonna do when you are deep in the whale shit - attach it then? Some people know how I like add-on thingys that keep the stock rover look, but even I wouldn't go for that. |

They are bad, bad, bad. But then I've said that already. An ARB through Nathan Crabtree is not much more than that contraption. Thanks, Mike B. |

I like carring that rear winch around though. The front needs to be set up higher than what you have shown there. But over all, there are better options Ron |

Will, Don't get a multimount. They suck. They're not as strong as a dedicated winch bumper and they rely on the strength of a single bolt that is rated to only 5,000 lbs. I just wanted to preserve the record for when you disregard everyone's comments here, just as you did with the Scorpion tires. |

John Lee is right BUT the single bolt (pin) is A) designed to take 7700 lbs in low range, not 5000lbs B) designed to accept the shock loads of towing a trailer at speed So I think it can take it, or at least can take it better than the four small bolts and aluminium housing they sit in the winch The main concern is bending the mount on side pulls and the abismal approach angle. Someone named mike had an ok set up with one but THERE ARE BETTER OPTIONS Ron |

I had that set-up on my former Toyota rig my .02: Pro: 1. leave the winch home when daily driving 2. I had a heavy cable bridle on bar that went to my frame D rings when I couldn't get the winch on. (I ran with it off) 3. Front receiver is just plain handy for other accessories 4. I never had to pass the cable under my rig 5. winch doesn't get weathered on the truck Con: 1. It's less handy for forward winching 2. It groans and pops more than a mounted system 3. definately lacked that butch trail dog look 4. it's heavy to schlep around and must be secured in bed/load space. |

winch... I thought you meant wench ;-] BTW I'm not sure I liked it. It worked, true, but I am sure there is a more elegant solution. Why not go the completely portavble way. they make those also, although as I recall the capacities are less |

really, John said it all. I think calling EE for an ARB is a better idea. If you want something stealthy (ie not a full bumper), there is a great genuine set up for sale by Josh F. Sorry about the tires, too...you really will need a bitchin recovery set up now! And don't think you won't break stuff with bad tires, stuff breaks when wheels spin fast and bounce. It's easier to not spin and bounce with a grippy tire... Just my opinion... Brian |

here's my general view on modifying the disco: the disco has to be ready at all times for whatever we throw at it. winch, tires, rack, whatever you have that enhance it's "usability" (does such word exist? ) so, the idea of having 2 sets of tires, removable winch, and other things that are removable and exchangeable... just ain't my idea of a well equipped disco. i think a nicely modified disco is a truck that can perform at anytime, like, RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW!!!! don't wanna hear the "i have to go home and get my winch..." or, "let me put my mud tires...." no, no... "right here, right now. let's do it." type thing. |

The reason I wont break stuff is because I will save my self the embarrasment of even going to the trail. Shit, I could hear the jeeps talking now... "Oh, yea Land Rover is sooo bad ass, yea right." They wouldn't be smart enough to understand that a tire makes all the difference in the world. |

Ho is right...the appeal of the Disco is that you CAN have all the stuff in the world slapped onto to it ALL the time, and it still lokoks great, presentable, and high class...but God knows in which pile of shit it will egt you through on the wqeekends, or when Nature dishes out a pee or two! "designed to take 7700 lbs in low range, not 5000lbs" Hmmm. The package my hitch pin came in said "5,000 lbs. rating". Maybe I got the cheapo pin? I did get it at Manny, Moe & Jack's. "so, the idea of having 2 sets of tires, removable winch, and other things that are removable and exchangeable... just ain't my idea of a well equipped disco." Agreed. A well-equipped Disco says, "I'm ready. Right here. Right now." It doesn't say, "Under construction" or "coming soon". |

A hitch pin has a shear load of 2x the cross sectional area of the 5/8" pin, because it has to shear both sides at once. a alloy steal hitch pin(4130 heat treated) has a ultmate strength in shear of 80,000psi 80,000 x (crosssectional area of).306=24,480 lbs 24,480lbs of force x 2 (sides of pin)=48960 lbs so in english it would take a load of 48960lbs to shear that pin. 29,376 lbs before the pin starts to change shape the pin is not gonna fail put I gotta say the weak point in a muti-mount is the fact you have to lug it around with human power. so even though the pin dosent fail the whole multi mount idea sucks!!!! but the pin wont fail. |

Ok so if ya gotta have your multi-mount I gotta multi mount for ya. no wires no carry (rolls like a wheel barrow) No fail self contained gas motor runs all day at 100% load can be winched into places where a truck cant get 10500 lb with 115' of 3/8" cable 15000 lb with 75' of 1/2" cable transports in 2" reciever Meet "TUG"
Now this was never designed to be on a truck while its driving terain. I built it to pull heavy boat lifts out of the lake on bluffy hills that a truck could never get to. but it has done mud hole duty at our personal mud hole many times pulling all sizes of trucks with ease. pretty handy . on my trail truck I have a full winch bumper with a winch always on the ready ,so as any serious wheeler should. |

Uh oh.... I've been reading all these posts about how bad the multi mount system is. For the last two weeks I've been trying to gind a picture of Miked1's set up and Ho was nice enough to e-mail it to me and not even laugh, out loud that is. Here's my delema...a friend gave me the winch because he sold his truck and didnt need it. now I'm wondering if if I should just scrap the idea and start over. If any of you have seen miked1's set up give me your feed back. I think his set up looks good and is functional too. Strength problems? My concern is the bracket and the weld set up not the pin. Yes, You can fit that winch into an ARB non airbag (with some work and a less than ideal position) Or a rovertym bumper. Ron |

What kind of a winch is it? If it's a warn, then it will mount right in the ARB. RoverTyms will probably fit both (Warn and SuperWinch). There are many bumper options out there. Thanks, Mike B. |

brian friend, yes the recievers do break off. I'v seen it happen. you are best off mounting it once correctly and being done. just about any winch can go on any truck ,just depends what is good enough for you. I like my winches tucked in between the frame rails some guys like them hanging out where everyone can see. decide what YOU want and make it happen |

550 for the basic RTE bumper, more if you want the brushbar or skid plate. ARb is about the same price but includes the brushbar but it is harder to make that winch fit. Ron FREE! That is a 750 winch! |

Hey WTurner, I was also facinated with the multi-mount mostly because I didn't have to replace my bumper. I checked around and everybody had something negative to say about it. There's a fellow by the name of Bill Burke who runs a course in Wheeling. He's very reputable and he has a few things to say about the multi-mount that you might like to read. His site is www.bb4wa.com Just keep in mind, alot of people want "the best of both worlds" and you usually have to give somewhere. I'd rather have a well equipted vehicle for off-road if I'm going to take it off-road. Cuz the only thing worse than getting stuck, is not being able to get unstuck! And I wouldn't want to trash my truck because I was too cheap to protect it. And while we are on the subject of winches, can someone tell me what size is ideal for the disco? Is 9000lbs enough? Is 12000lbs overkill? How bout 15000, is that ridiculous? And will all warn winches, no matter the size, fit in an arb? Thanx... |

Damnit! where are the archieves! I can't sleep so here goes; All warn winches (except maybe the M150000 will fit the non airbag disco I bumper. M12000 is ideal. The rest require some mods (particularly the HS9500 and HS9500i) and the i series is far from ideal as the solinoid housing acts as a scoop for water (right Dom ) Ron |

Musky, "so in english it would take a load of 48960lbs to shear that pin. 29,376 lbs before the pin starts to change shape" These calculations may indeed be correct. I have no idea since I'm no metallurgist or engineer. But I have seen a hitch pin bent from recovery use when the tow strap was inserted into the trailer hitch and the hitch pin used to secure the end of the strap. Lots of people secure their straps to their trailer hitches in this fashion. The pin I saw wasn't bent to hell or anything, but there was a slight bow in it from its being used in this fashion. And I highly doubt there was 20,000 lbs. of force involved in those recoveries. |

John , the pin was bent that way because the force was applied to the center of it. If you are using a tube that slides into the reciever you dont have that same sort of load on the pin. "Shear strength" comes into play at that point. The multi mount is still a hunk of shit and it really has nothign to do with the pin. The square tubing used to mate the mount to the truck is plenty strong on a stright pull , but not so strong on an off center pull. It will also twist as the cable heads for one side of the drum and the anchor point is higher or lower then the ass end of the Disco. With light winching it probably works great after you explode both of your balls getting the damn thing on the truck , oops ,thats if the reciever isnt buried in whale shit and there is sufficient room to do so... I hate em... Kyle |
