I'm thinking of buying my 2000 disco ii 50,000 miles at the end of the lease. Well maintained car - no major problems. what sort of mileage do you think i can get out of this thing based upon others experience? is the 100,000+ vehicle the rule or the exception?

155K. Very few major problems, many minor ones that are annoyances at worst.

Lots of fun and nothing I'm worried about taking on long trips.

123k, no major problems. Recently acquired the quite usual exhaust leak and power steering leak. Engine and transmission seem to be running great. I've been doing about 3.5k a month for the past 7 months now, no worries about it making it anywhere.

Mine... 172,331 miles and I am trying to kill the thing! When I took it to LR with 137,000 miles, they said it wouldn't last a month(Land Rover Roaring Fork in CO). All I have ever replaced besides fluid is a power steering pump and a broken diff that I broke in Moab. I replaced the suspension to Rovertym but nothing was previously broken. Heavy, heavy trail use.

Only 104K on my D90. Of course, I bought it with 100K...

Runs like a champ. I can still drive it with 33"s on at 85. Although I don't recommend doing this often...

We bought our '95 not long ago, at ~125k, we're now over 130k, and it is a stronger runner than the '99 I had that was at '81k when I let it go.... not as fuel efficent, but smoother.

That is common. A lot of guys have come to the theory of only buying used at ~30k. By this point all the little bugs have been worked out, and you should have a solid truck. Stick it out for another 20k and you should be good for the next 100.

I've only got 40K and have had the PS pump replaced three times, and have had the seals on the Tcase replaced about four times. Runs great, but my driveway is really pretty now! I love the smell of gear oil in the morning!!!!

It still under warrenty, so I'm beating the hell out of it, and just make the dealer fix the stuff, that way, when she's out of warrenty, it'll be a new truck!!!

I have two disco's, one 300TDI '97, needed major repairs, after only 7,000km the timing belt was eaten up half way, gearbox was replaced at 15,000km since it didn't want to shift to 2nd anymore. But it never left me stranded and is still running healthy at 120,000km.But as pointed out earlier by Zak, it leaks al over the place and has tarmaced the driveway at home.
The 2nd, a 2002 TD5, is more serious, as per british QA/QC standard the cruise control did not work from mile one and they forgot to put a lockring on the rocker arm resulting in breaking off the top of injector 4, but again not stranded, I drove back from Dubai to Oman, that's why Landrover probably put 5 cylinders in.
After 5 disco's all with british QA/QC problems my next 4x4 will be Toyota, you don't need to ask the Q of how many miles, they simply go for at least 300,000 miles.

'98 Disco w/108+K and still going. I bought it off-program at 52,000. Still have the same tires and everything - but mostly it's a local commute and long triper for two old people. I'm so happy with it I'm thinking of looking for an earlier Disco just to turn into a trash hauler and lumber getter. I drove a pretty naked 95 not long ago but the dealer won't let it go.

I read it here so often, people changing seals, gaskets, and power steering components.

I think you all should get this one fact into your head.

Rover's don't leak... they're just shedding excess britishness.

BTW '98 D1 w/100K and a parking space that I consider marked territory.

On the subject of longevity, it appears the engines and general drivetrains are tough from the various comments, but how about the transmissions? I am most interested in comments about the automatic trans vehicles, especially if used off road. Comments anyone?

Had my 95 1 year. Had xmission guy do a pre-purchase check who said it may outlast me. He discouraged fluid change as it was burnt and new fluid would possilbe cause leaks etc. Did it anyway and no problem. Seems the big stuff is tough. Block, crank, rings, xmission, xfercase, diffs.

I'm at 120k miles and expect now I can upgrade some stuf w/o worrying about big stuff falling out.

These trucks are an emotional love-hate thing. If you don't tend to humanize your vehicles or enjoy working on them, get the Toyo.

98 Disco, 46,500 miles and it's not cost me a dime in repairs. Everything so far has been fixed under warranty (mainly leaking seals and PS boxes). I just got a 100,000 mile/6 year bumper to bumper warranty for $3400. So I guess that I'll be spending an average of $340 a year for repairs for the first 10 years of ownership.

Thanks,
Mike B.

Two '96's...130k no problems ('cept rear windows inop) and 69k (only speed sensor changed). Just regular oil & filter changes...slight oil seepage on rear main seal on both...that's all.

96 disco with 110,000 miles. Cracked block!!!!!! Just took delivery of a new 4.6 short block from RPI today. Heads were just redone with new valves 3 weeks ago. Going with there 2 chips, 10-15% more gas milage and torque. 10-15 more hp on top of the 30 hp with the 4.6. Should be fun!! And all the other problems, power steering pump, o2 sensors, starter, stepper motor, brakes, exhaust y-pipe broke, etc. But still I Love my Disco!!

My disco has quite low mileage, but a friend here in the UK has a 200Tdi (94) with nearly 400,000 miles on it.
Gets used on a farm, tarmac, and off-road.

Regular oil & filter change (every 3000 miles) and it goes like a teenager.

Good luck
Horness.

The standard joke among Landrover owners in Australia is that if the vehicle is not leaking oilat every seal, then this just means that you have run out of oil.

At 99,000 km I have had to replace every seal. Like Zac and ScottP the driveway is a disaster.

Please look at my separate note posted on 1 November 2002 on metal fatigue in my Disco. Would be very interrested in information, particularly from James Gall (Jimmyg).

72500 Miles on '96 Disco - Bought it at 66700 for $9,500. I had to replace the power-steering pump shortly after I bought it. I've had it off-road alot. Bent the rear bumper (just a little getting off a rock). ABS light went on a couple of weeks ago while off-road. Intermitten rear windows not rolling up or down. Runs great, I love it!

'98 Disco - 112K KM or about 75K Miles

Needs rebuilt transmission as of last week... Had power steering pump last year.

Never been off road because I decided to keep my beat up '92 Landcruiser for weekend trips to the desert.

Given that transmission broke down without any abuse whatsoever, I'm glad I didn't take it out. The Arabian Desert is the last place you want your car to break down.

99 D1, had since new. 90000 miles.
Lots of road use every day, moderate trail use when I can get away from work.

one set of brake pads,
one set tires,
regular maintence.

No oil leaks,
light lifter clatter on cold mornings since about 40K, only last a few minutes.

Least repairs I have ever put in any truck I have ever owned.

Planning to run atleast till 200K

My $.02
