I would love to have that info for my 95 disco, so I could tweek the audio system while keeping the factory head unit. If any one has the wiring diagram for a disco I, the info would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 97 disco. The audio shop said I need to bypass the factory amplifier so my speakers will work, they also said that I need to hard wire the head unit to the factory wires. They also told me it would cost $125 for them to do it. If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I don't know what the hell they were thinking when they designed this s*&%. I have spent less time doing engine swaps in many differant types of vehicles then wiring my freakin head unit up. Ok, purple is memory (supposed to be YELLOW!!!)... green/orange is power (RED, HELLO?!!!)...

I have been reading over, experimenting, and testing for hours (just today) and all I have completed is memory and power, this is absolutely ridiculous.

Technically I have spent weeks on this one simple project. It took me nearly 2 weeks to figure out that a 1987-94 Volkswagon Amplified Radio adapter is the only thing available to fit an OEM Discovery harness. That's nice, the adapter fits in the harness plug but the wires aren't all right, but whatever...that is simple to fix...just pull the wires out of the adapter and put them in the right place.

But what about the speakers? Why can't I just wire them up?
1) My manual wiring diagram appears to be all wrong. (the wires don't exist or wrong colors)
2) ...I can't figure out which wires go to the speakers
3) Even if I did figure out the speakers how would I know if I was right because supposebly they won't play w/o bypassing the amp yet on my wiring diagram the front and rear speakers don't go to an amp??? (only the subwoofer)

BTW, I am installing a 7" Panasonic slide-out/flip-up LCD screen in mine, I have a 8' wiring harness consisting of 2 dozen wires I have bundled together and wrapped in nylon tubing (orignally cable ties but took them off) that goes from the head unit behind the dash, under the carpet, to under the seat where my control unit sits with a spare 2' of wires. That was a chore itself. The screen comes out and up and back in as it should, it turns on and off with the ignition and I even have video: PS2, computer, etc. but no sound dammit.

I am going to stop by the place I bought my installation accessories from tomorrow hoping they can help me finish this....

I have installed dozens of stereos in friends and families cars and have never came across any of the problems I am encountering. As far as I am concerned I would go ahead and have it installed for $125 because I believe I have wasted well over that amount on my time alone and feel I have accomplished nothing.

I have been taking pictures and will eventually have all this documented on my website and once I complete this project I should know enough to help everyone else.

The following picture is the wiring diagram I scanned from the Haynes Manual. Click the link below it to enlarge:

I installed a Clarion AutoPC in my old 97 DI. Took probably 10hrs or so spread across a week. Tons of cables to run all over the place (to gps, cd changer, brain unit, etc). It can be done, but you're right - pain in the ass to do in the disco.

One good thing about the disco is that it's so 'modular' - just remove a few screws here and there and it all comes apart for you.

Good luck!!!

I installed my head unit in about an hour. Thank you Discoweb. Do a search for 'radio diagram' and you'll find a pic of the audi/vw wiring harness and how to modify it to fit. don't worry about rewiring around the amp......

Look for the amp. I belive in a D1 it is under the pass seat all you speaker wires are right there. if you don't know how to go about test to see which wires are the speakers then take a speaker out of the door and look at the wire colors and match this to the ones on the amp. I could tell you how to test for the wires but if you messed up you could cause damage to you amp worse yet if you were testing in the wrong place could possibly blow a air-bag. Also you can just take the radio speaker wires and wire then directly to your speakers. If you don't want to mess with the amp this would be the easiest way.

I have searched and searched and have not been able to find the 'radio diagram' on this site. Any more hints to where I can find it?
