My 96 seems to run pretty good, good power, smooth etc. But several times lately I have lost power completely for several seconds while running approx. 80mph, this is after about 50 miles of cruising. Yesterday it happened repeatedly for about 10 miles while coming down from Shreavport, I pulled off and gassed up (it was down to 1/4) While I was at the station I decided to do a quick check of the electrics with the following results... Bat voltage 12.5 engine off. Voltage idling nothing on 13.3. voltage idling everything on 13.6. I continued my trip at 70 and had no further probs.Today I replaced the plugs and fuel filter, checked the air filter (ok) and changed the oil. It Then did a test drive at approx 80 for about 35 miles and it didn't act up. My question for all of you is what next??? I'm a good mechanic and will tackle anything but don't yet have good familiarity with Discos Thanks Gordon |

Had the same problem and the D'web diagnosed it as bad Vehicle Speed Sensor. Replaced it and that was that. Ron Ward |

Above diagnosis is more than likely correct. Same happend to my 97 SD. According to the dealer, the VSS thinks your going close to the vehicle cut-off speed and cuts your engine power. |

Could this same problem cause the vehicle power steering and breaking to become unstable? My wife lost control of our 2002 SE yesterday afternoon. She says the power steering was erratic and difficult to control and that the breaks did not have full stopping power. Fortunately, she is OK. The vehicle did its job of protecting her. Also, fortunately the insurance is taking care of everything. Unfortunately, we will be without our favorite vehicle for a couple of weeks. Thanks for the input. Best regards, Brad |

Brad, The VSS would have nothing to do with the power steering, nor the braking. What was the situation that your wife was in when the incident occurred? What kind of road? Weather? etc? -L |

didn't we hear about something like that happening on the board a little while ago (thinking couple years)? also, possibility (as it has been done by at least one person on this board ) is that instead of hitting just the brakes, your wife hit the brake pedal and gas pedal at the same time, making it feel like brake action not happening and too fast to control steering. The pedals happen to be a little closer than average and it has definitely been known to happen. just another possibility.... |

Where is the VSS? Is it much of a problem to replace (in a 95 Disco)? |

It's on the transfer case, it's two screws and a plug, a one-banana job.... -L |
