which would be a better way to go?
Rovertyme 3 inch suspension lift with 265/75R16 BFG A/Ts or OME HDs with either the spacers or not the spacers with same tires. also, with both, should i get new shocks and what else may i need

if you are only going to 265/75's, just stick with 2 inches. you don't need that extra inch for the tires, and you are more susceptible to vibes if you do go 3 inches. space or trim the rear fender lip and you are good to go. and then if you do eventually need more lift, get spacers.

If you have a DII you will not need to do any triming for 265/75/16 with a 2" lift.

You will need new, longer travel shocks to benefit from the lift. The only other potential modification is longer brake lines, although with only two inches of lift, you probably can just modify the current brackets.

If it's a DI, you won't need longer shocks, nor the longer brake lines (or modified brackets) for a 2" lift.

If you just want to fit tires with no danger of vibes, consider a body lift. I got the vibes and now kinda wish I'd gone the body lift route, although most of my vibes were finally traced to a bad fron driveshaft.

heh-heh, after all this, still noone told you which brand is better though. i honestly have no idea which is better, rovertym or ome. but, if you do go ome, go through expeditionexchange so you get matched sets. i personally have rovertym's, but that was just cause i got them local and slightly used.

Ya, but, I didn't drive too much in those two weeks that i had them :).. You run the risk of getting vibes no matter which susp lift you choose. The body lift would not cause you vibes but, when you think about it, you should get stiffer springs for the body lift so you are still buying springs.. Though you won't be buying drive shafts, and all the other things you're going to have to get to try and get rid of the vibes.

Can't speak for Rovertym stuff. I too was asking myself the same question a few months ago. i went with the OME HD with the same tires, springs and shocks, and I think it does great.

Did not get if you are in a DI or DII. I have DII and no modification needed except turning the bracket around for the plastic wheel well protector thingy on the front bumper. It's quiet and gets a little better articulation than stock, and the tires...great!

All in all I love the OME HD lift with BFG AT's. I say go with that but i have never run Rovertym. OME's are going to be about $400-$500 less as well.

I have a 02 Kalahari. I wanted to lift 2" and add some taller tires to gain some ground clearance. I called the dealer just to check on warranty issues. At first he said only springs would not be covered, but then started rambling on about steering, abs and such. What would be the best way to go about getting something in writing so I can know in advance what exactly will not be covered by the warranty?

PS. Is it true that this web site is hosted on a laptop with a wireless modem in a 91 Classic?

dave, do you have any other dealer in your area?
most dealers i know don't care if you have a 2 inch lift.

now, about the laptop and wireless thing... where did you hear that rumor? :)

I have the 2" rovertym springs and 235's. I had to trim the rear fenders and ended up with some vibes. vibes gone with rovertym's rear and front arms and some new u-joints. the rig goes great and very minimal vibration at approx 15mph. so far I am super impressed with rovertym's parts and 235's. just my opinion.

I'll check with the other dealer's. There are three here in the metro area, I picked the one closest to home. I put the OME mediums on my 91 Classic and 265 Summits. It was awesome! Gave me about 2" plus the tires. A little scary at high speed, but after a short time, no one in family ever asked to borrow my car... Cool.

No offense DEAD ROVER but I have a hard time believing you blew a rear diff and a transfercase due to a 2" lift, the drive shafts MAYBE.

I have 2inch Rovertym lift with rear links and have never had a vibe at all. I run 265/75r16 MTR with some trimming in the rear. I am adding 1 inch rovertym spacers next week. I have a 95 D1

I really hate CAPS LOCK

I like the OME stuff. Just don't make the same mistake I did and run with the Medium Duty spring. I just converted over to Heavy's.

Paul,
I am in the process of doing the same - I should know by now: screw the 1/2 steps - get what you want right off the bat, you are going to wind up with it anyway.

I ran the OME 2" (medium) for over 60,000 miles on my 91 Classic. I put the lift and tires on at at 85,000 and never had a problem (265r75 x16's). I traded it in (well gave it away) at 145,000 mi. Never had a vibration, replaced a diff, or any type of drive line or u-joint. Just lucky? I can't really see that 2" would change the geometry that much? I just want to get in writing what the dealer has to say...

We have some two track trails that get fairly eroded over time. There is one trail in paticular, on one of my projects, that I've been down many times in '91. First trip down the trail in my Disco, and I "ran a ground". Luckily I wasn't going that fast, and was able to crank the wheels to get enough to get some traction and back it up. Supprising though, though someone had set the hand brake....

I think that the biggest determining factor as to what you will end up with could well be the way the truck was treated by the POs.

I have the Rover Tyms in the rear (I am a CHEAP Bastard!). The carnage I have suffered was completely due to the previous owner not having greased the front driveshaft sliding joint. 20K and it finally started rumbling (not just vibrating, you could hear it, as well as feel it). Pulled the driveshaft out to replace (replaced the rear too as balancing weights were falling off!) and found the sliding joint wasted. Had I continued, I am certain that eventually, the transfer case or diff would have suffered.

When you do this stuff to a vehicle of which the provenance is questionable, you will have to monitor things closely and NEVER turn the radio up to cover a noise.

Dead Rover, what were the specifics of your failures? I think we could all learn from your experiences of what not to do. I don't wish to benefit from your misfortune, but neither do I wish to repeat your unsuccessful experiment.
