A friend of mine warned me about using battery cables to help jump his car. He mentioned that even if the cables are connected properly, the computer chip in my Disco II may be injured when trying to jump him. Anyone know if this is true? Thanks. Jason |

If at all concerened, leave the "donor" car shut off. There is a similar issue with glow plug equiped diesels. On many the plugs are designed to operate at 12v or less, any higher voltage and they burn out. Alternators charge anywhere from 13-16v (16 if they are knackered). Hook that up to the dead car, and you've fried the glow plugs when you switch on and energise them. I could imagine a similar issue with computer modules, though since they are used during mormal running, I'd be supprised if it's an issue. There may be some that are only used when starting that only operate at 12v or less, so it *could* be an issue. Ask your firend for specifics, or call your dealer. But, as I said, leave the donor car swtiched off, and you should be ok. You can run the donor car to get *some* charge to your battery, then switch it off before starting the dead one. |
