Looks like it might be saying Firestone on the side, but its hard to tell. I don't recognize the tread. |

Ya, I'm not sure either. Never seen that tread pattern before. I thought it was a Pirelli tire but checked their site and there's nothing that has that pattern and it doesn't look like anything that Firestone or Bridgestone carries either. A |

Thanks Mr T. You don't happen to know who the owner of that XD is or are they a member of Discoweb (saw the picture at the Expedition Exchange site so thought they might be a member here)?? I have some questions to ask them about their truck. A |

Alan, I have those tires as well. They work great for an all-around tire. |

Hi Greg, I heard they're a bit on the soft side. Is that true? How noisy are they? Good snow traction? A |

Alan, I had heard that they were "soft" as well. I'm assuming this is aimed at the sidewall thickness (2 ply I believe), but I've had no problems, and have had them on some pretty sharp rocks. I have had one puncture, but that was a road trip where the front tire kicked up a 4" long screw and it went right into the center of the rear tread. Perfect shot! Yes, they are very quiet on the road. Quieter thatn the stock Goodyears were. I love these tires for an all-around tire. Clean pretty well in the mud also. Haven't tried them in the snow yet, but they are great in sand, so snow performance should be pretty good as well. |

We are sponsored by Yokohama, I had the YOKO AT's on for about 60,000km The best thing about the Yokohama's is the 80,000km tread wear warranty....they are soft but that is great in snow and sand, very good on rocks as well. Very good on wet raods. Just make sure you buy the "LT" and not the "P" Does not break up on rocks like the BFG AT's does. I now have 235/85 Yoko MT's One of our TLC's have been going for 60,000km on the MT's. |

Hi Willie, What do you mean by "does not breakup on rocks like BFG At's"? Is that tread wear warranty dealer specific? I was at the Yokohama site and it says the treadwear warranty is for 40,000 miles which works out to about 64,000 kms so just curious if there was some kind of dealer thing going on. A |

I have the Geolander AT+II I like them. They handle good on road and off. In the snow and rain they were by far better than the BF's AT's I had. Not sure how the newer AT's are. I had the older version. They do have a little bit of a softer feel than the BF's did. Unless the BF AT's were greatly improved I would buy these again if I had a choice between the two. JMHO |

Hi Jim, Ya I was wondering how they performed on-road. I've had my BFG AT's (the new ones) for about a month. I'm happy with them as they are much better than the factory tires (and quite quiet) I had but I have noticed they're a bit hard on pavement driving. Handling is a bit less friendly and they're harder on gas mileage than I expected. When I saw the Geolanders, the tread pattern on them suggests they are a bit better on pavement without much sacrifice to off-road. As well, the tread pattern also suggested better channeling of snow, water, and mud. That's why I'm asking now. Just curious how much the tire shop will ding me if I go ask them to switch tires after only a months driving (no off-roading during the month). A |

Not sure how much they will ding you on that. I got my full set of 5 from discount tire for just under $500 for 245/75/16 mounted and balanced. They ride good on road I believe they do have a much softer compound than the BF's They seem to stil well to the dry pavement and channeled water, slush and snow very well. It seemed to perform better on ice also than the BF's did for me. You may also want to check the air pressure in your tires. It may make it ride harder especially if you have a E load rating on them. jim |

Alan, The expeditions we do in Africa are very rough on our tires. We have been down all the roads...we have tried every tire out there. The BFG AT's lost chuncks out of them. I do not know why, I only imagine it was because they are using a harder compound rubber, that when travelling on rocky roads for 3000km they get cuts and break up. The Yoko's don't, as for the 80,000km, No that is not dealer specific. All our clients at the driving school wanting to upgrade from the stock to an AT gets the same deal. Maybe it is a Canadian thing but I know for a fact the Geolander ATII Plus has this. One of our Toyota Pick ups ran just over 70,000km on them and they gave us credit on new ones for not making it to 80. This was in Canada about two years ago. Willie |

Plus, for about $5-$7 per tire, you can get the road hazard coverage, which will cover them off-road as well. So even if I blow out a sidewall on a rock or stump and it can't be repaired, I get a free replacement. I was running mine at 32psi, but recently went up to 36 psi(front & rear), and the ride hasn't suffered. I guess that shows that they do have a soft sidewall. |

I thinks so. I don't remember what we calculated based on the originals (I thought it was 27/37) but I recently saw the tires in person and they are pretty stiff in the sidewalls. The tires are rated as over 3000lbs at 50 psi each. So my guess would be you could go below what you're running now. It looks like my buddy, too, will not get the MT/Rs and is springing for the AT/KOs instead. Once he installs them, I'll check them out personally on his Disco to see how they behave and what pressure should work. We're also getting some snow here, so we should see how they work in the slippery and wet conditions. But I know from the past they do really well in snow. If you doubt the numbers try the chalk method. |

Hi Milan, Ya there's snow here. It's been snowing for the last two days off and on (had to go buy a snow shovel yesterday). Mostly at night. But so far, I'm impressed with them in snow/slippery surface. Much better than the stock tires. Truck's a lot more sure-footed and ABS doesn't kick in all the time like it used. I remember last winter, ABS would kick in at the tiniest thing...bugged the hell out of me. But so far, it's only kicked in once and that was because I was on ice at a corner and even then it wasn't for very long. I'm just curious about the Yoko's because of the channels built into them. Hey. I'm planning on getting a new set of tires (235/85-16) in the next month or so and there's sure a confusing array of them out there. I'm kinda, sorta, leaning towards the Dunlop Radial Rover R/Ts, or maybe these Geolandars. The Yokos just don't LOOK like they'd be as good off-road as the Dunlops though. Willie, sounds like you've used them on a lot of different terrain. I guess you think they're better off-road than they look? I don't mean at all to be rude but maybe you just feel obligated to recommend them as they sponsor you? That's the way it often is...just want to bring it out. While I'm asking you questions, you're in BC right? I'm currently on Vancouver Island for a while (weeks/months). Any suggestions on where to get tires? I'm in Vancouver area weekly so I could pick some up around there too. If anybody's reading my long post, I do a lot of road driving (currently commuting between Vancouver Island and Seattle every week) and also a lot of off-roading. Up here I need a tire good in snow and reasonable mud, and long-lasting on the road and safe too. I also usually live in Southern California so I need a tire that's going to perform well there too. Any suggestions? Thanks! |

Andrew, I'm in the Everett/Lake Stevens area and have the Geolandars. Let me know if you want to see them or go out and get the trucks muddy sometime. So far they are a vast improvement over the stock tires off-road and they are very well behaved on-road. I've had to miss the weekly "meetings" lately but I will try to attend one soon so you can see the tires while we have a beer. I've got 265/75s and got them at Discount Tires in Everett. Rick |

Andrew, take a look at the set on Rick's DII before you buy. I haven't seen them perform, but they look stout and as Willie mentioned will last for years. I'm a bit suspicious too. I think that each time Willie plugs the Yoko tires, he receives an instant $100 kickback Some of us might be heading out the state sponsored highway of death early Sunday morning. No definite plans, Rick suggested Index Wall area. Call me later this afternoon (206) 788-0571 |

Hey everybody. Rick, maybe I will try to look at them on your Disco some time, and even get out off-road with you if it works out. Moe, I already responded to your email about Sunday - unfortunately I'm going to be up here tomorrow, not down in Seattle until Monday. In future weeks though, if I have a few days' notice I can get down and go off-roading with people on Sundays! Alan, I was talking about Wilie Joubert up above who is sponsored by Yokohoma for his OffRoad Academy (www.offroadacademy.com). The contact info on his web site shows GPS co-ordinates and a phone number but no mailing address for those of us without a map handy of BC with GPS co-ordinates... I looked at the Geolandars at a local shop here on Vancouver Island the other day. They look fairly "tame" but what really matters is how they perform. |

Hi Andrew, Ok, thanks. I'm not sure where Willie is from but in an earlier post on this thread, he mentioned expeditions in Africa so not sure if that means he lives there, or has been there on expeditions...not that this helps either way. However, I have looked at various reviews on these Geolander tires and they seem to consistently get very high ratings. I think they may be a better all around tire while the BFG AT's might lean a little more towards off-road but I'm no tire expert. A |

From http://www.offroadacademy.com/contact.php : Offroad Academy Inc. Phone: (604) 913 8341 [...] GPS Location 49' 21`53" N 123'15`08" W So their phone number at least is on mainland BC. I think there are just Too Many tire possibilities. I'd pretty much already ruled out the BFGs although really I just want to get's what's "best". It seems like I'll wear out the MT/MTR type tyres too fast with all the highway driving I do, so the Yokos or Dunlops seemed like a good compromise as I still need something competent off-road. Although anything will be better than bald Goodyear Eagles...haha bald eagles. |

Hi Andrew, Ya that's definitely a BC area code. Are you from BC too? Ya the Yoko's seem to be a bit more road friendly but the tread on them doesn't seem to be compromising the off-road capabilities that much for an AT tire and I like the channels built into them. I went with the BFG AT's beofre Willie posted so I never really looked at the Geolander's until afterwards but I'm happy with the BFG's. It's made a bit of a difference with my fuel mileage which I guess is to be expected since the tread on them is a bit more aggressive than the balding Michelin XPC's I had. I didn't go with MT or MTR's purely for the reason that I don't go wheeling every weekend like a lot of these guys do. It seemed to be over kill for me...although, I'd probably be able to climb the shit out of speedbumps!! But I do go enough that an AT tire would be more than sufficient and I wanted something that was snow rated. Winters in Alberta are sometimes kinda crazy! My Disco is more for getting me to places that I do things at like fishing spots or climbing spots than it is for pure wheeling...although I don't turn it down when the opportunity arises. A |

Willie, You suggested an "LT" tire versus a "P" tire. What exactly is the difference? Is it how heavy duty they are? A |

I'm in BC right now (Vancouver Island). I'll be here for the next couple weeks/months. Not sure. Alan, maybe you already know this, but the "P" is for passenger cars, and the "LT" stands for light truck. I don't know much more than that except that the LT tires generally have a stiffer sidewall and can carry a heavier load, while the P tires are a bit softer and cushier. |

Hi Andrew, Ya I knew what the letter designations meant but I think Willie was implying some kind of technical reason that I was looking for...unless it is as simple as what you stated. LT means heavier duty than P...don't know. A |

Andrew, with regards to the "tame" look of the Geolandar, I think it's all about what you want to do with the tire. They don't have as aggressive a tread as a mud tire or super swamper but they are better behaved on road while still giving you good grip off-road. It sounds like you do a lot of miles on-road with your commute so you should consider them. Compared to the other AT, etc. tires I think the tread pattern is really good. FWIW Rick |
