The main instrument panel lights on my '97 Disco stopped working. All the little lights (parking brake, anti-lock brake, high beams, etc.) work fine. The problem just seems to be with the illumination of the speedo/tacho and a/c lights. Everything else seems okay. Maybe its the rheostat, but I tried a used one (for a quick check) and nothing happened. I need help because it's really hard to drive in the dark!

Have you checked all fuses?
This happened to me once in my 98. It's one of the fuses under the hood, can't remember which off the top of my head. I wouldn't recommend driving around at night until you replace it as your tail lights are on the same circuit. If you must drive at night before fixing it I suggest using the rear fogs...might prevent you from getting pulled over.

I had the same problem your headlight turn signal switch contacts are worn out. Mine was off and on then I traced it to the switch contacts being worn. Took the switch apart and put a thin layer of solder on the contact panel and it fixed it for about a year. I finally bought a new switch. Discount Rovers were the best price. $120 I believe.

I had the same problem. One of my fog lights blew. This resulted in blowing a fuse every time I tried to turn on the fog lights. It also resulted in preventing the instrument lights from coming on

Interestingly enough, it was trying to turn on my fog lights that resulted in my blown fuse as well. I hadn't tried turning them on again since that time. I'll have to check the bulbs and try it again.

I currently have the same problem too on my 96;
Checked all the fuses and light bulbs.. All were ok.

I noticed that if I flip the switch on-off-on-off over and over the lights would work sometimes.
Other times they dont come on at all, or come on for about 1 second.

I'm not too worried about it though, since I still have warranty.

If your still having trouble after I get around to going to the dealer let me know and Ill post what they did to fix mine.

Try jumping out the dash dimmer. Mine blew on my Mazda, so I just jumped it out.

Worth a look...

Oh yeah another way I was able to tell it was my switch was after turning on my lights you slowly turned the headlight switch towards off and the dash lights would light up if you just held it in that position.

I'm not sure what to do. I hate to have to pull out that switch only to find that this wasn't the problem. All fuses look okay. Could there be a relay problem?

Parrish,
Do you have a buddy with a Disco? If so you could swap switches just to test. Pretty simple. Two screws hold in the cover behind the steering wheel and two screws hold in the switch and unplug the connecters and try your buddies. Maybe there is someone close to you on this board with a D1. I would let you try my switch if you are in Salt Lake.
