I have a 97 S1 Disco Auto V8 and have been having problems with it.

1. Not starting ever now and then, like it will turn over but just want kick over. Have replaced plugs and leads (which made the car run alot better) and also AFM, the electrics seem to be ok as I am getting a reading on the ignition coil. Also I have had a timing light hooked up to the plugs and that seems to be ok. What can I test next ?

2. The other problem i have is with it idling, like it will drop down to just about to stalling and then jump back up to normal idle, I notice it more when reversing. I have replaced the spark plugs and leads, also the AFM. - All this seemed to fix it... But not confident that it has. U also noticed it more when engine was hot.

Another example of what has happened in the past is that I can't get it started and for some reason (maybe I pumped the gas too much) but I think I flooded the engine (Is this possible, i.e. flooding a EFI engine ?), because 1. I smelt alot of petrol in the engine bay and 2. when it did kick over a lot of smoke came out of the exhaust.....

Any suggestions would be great..

Thanks
Matt.

!. Have you checked for a blocked air filter>
2. Loose or damaged connections or damp connections.
3. Leaking fuel injectors
4. Stepper motor blocked or dirty.
5. Throttle potentiometer
6. Check airflow sensor
7 Fuel pressure regulator.
8. Faulty ECU unit
check every thing one by one, lots of things can give you the problems you are experiencing.

Timing and incorrectly gapped plugs can also cause hard starting.
Sorry I don't have a sure fix

For the times you cant get it started and it seems like you flooded it:
Turn of the car and undo the gas cap for 10 sec put it back on and try starting it again.

it sounds exactly like the stepper motor.. very easy fix.. two bolts and a plug hold the thing in place.. I removed it and soaked it in carb cleaner for a day and sprayed up in the thing and haven't had the problem again in months...

sounds like it could also be possible arching..check the plug from the ignition coil to the cap....

I doubt if it is arching. A 97 Disco (NAS V8) will have the GEMS system. As such it does not have a coil, distributor, or a cap. It has 4 coil packs.

Thanks,
Mike B.
