I've got some Wolf steel wheels coming my way for my D1 and am looking at tire options for off-road. I'm not about to start a brand debate, just had a question on retreads. A guy I worked with suggested going this route for off-road tires. My concern would be the retread would not hold up as well off-road as a standard tire. Does anyone have experience with these? My budget is limited so I'm looking at various options.

The prices sure are appealing. I e-mailed THEM and was told I could get a four 225X75R-16 mud terrain tires for $240 shipped to my door and 245X75R-16 for $260. The casings they use are Michelin, Bridgestone, and Goodyear. They also carry a 2 years or 24,000 miles workmanship & materials warranty.

sounds like a cost-effective option for your fleet of commercial Discoveries...

Could you imagine the cost to maintain such a fleet?

I have purchased very good mud tires from Hitech Retreading on the internet... They were 245r15s as I remember The cost was about 56 dollars each
plus about 6 shipping. The tires have been on our barn trooper for 2 years (about 20k miles and are still in very good shape. They even balanced really well when they were installed. Can I recomend them ... YEH.

My experiences with retreads over the past have been less than impressive. Although I have only used them on passanger cars during times of $ drought. I listened to all the hype by the salesman saying " Did you know that retreads are used on 747 jumbos?", and they are guaranteed to this and that. But you should ask yourself, what sort of treatment did the person who previously owned the tyre (tire) casing gave the tyre ( tire)? Was it subjected to abuse, severe knocks. No one realyy knows the answer to this. Also although most of us say we use our Discos for "offroad use" . The truth is that most of us use our Discos for say 95% on the tarmac, going to and thro to work/home and getting to our "offroad " destination. Speeding on freeways, stopping from speed, so think of these recycled tyres (tires) carrying the weight of you 2 ton + gear and performing like a new tyre (tire).
Experiences I had with recaps,
1. they are speed limited.
2. They are hard to accurately balance
3. I have had blow outs, where I never had this with normal tyres ( tires)
4. I have had tread separate from the casing during hiway travel.
One only has to look along the Insterstates and see the remains of the trucking communities recaps littering along the road side.
I am now a sworn advocate of new tryes( tires ),
I now would rather save the extra $ and buy a new tyre (tire) as what price do I put on my loved ones lives

I used lots of retreaded tires back in the starving student days. The fact is I never had any trouble with them even on a heavy 70s 4 door sedan.

I would be more inclined to use them for work on the trail where any failures would be at low speeds and tires get chewed up no matter how expensive they were to buy at the Michelin store. Anyone who uses their rig off road a lot, knows that their tires won't be around for more than a season or two anyway.

Long use on the highway at high temps is where I suspect retreads might have problems, if they are going to have problems. That is where the real danger for family is. That is where I would give the Michelin Man my cash.

It may be old school thinking, but I wouldn't use retreads on the front of a vehicle that is used on road. I wouldn't have any qualms about using them on all four corners of a atrickly off-road vehicle, or on just the rear on highway.

The reason I say this is because tread seperation at speed is bad news, and on the front even worse news. Retreads are more likely to suffer from this.

Of course, if you normally use Firestone tires, it won't matter to you ;-)

shit, man...you're looking at $250-300 for used tires? You can get 4 reasonably good tires for $100 per. I can see goin retread if you wanted a set of monster muds to shred one weekend and they cost $10 a pop, but a Land Rover with dedicated retread tires? Do you spread Grey Poupon on a shit-on-a-shingle sandwich? I think not....

just my 2 cents, a pal o mine bought a set of retreads from hitech and i was dissappointed in the tread depth for a MT, also after some wheeling he through a chunck of rubber the size of my hand off the one rear tire, but didn't flatten the tire, the other dissappointing thing about their retreads is that the load range was weak, B i think, as well as the sidewalls were not so new looking,
For 94$ a piece for a nice new pep boys enforcer or their AT knockoff, how could you go wrong? also how many pep boys are there for a tire replacement, verses retread co's?

And just for good measure, Tire rack has the Yoko Geolander for $89 bucks a tire.

Seems like an better option in the long run than a retread.

just my .02

ps: I always thought the proper analogy was "it's like putting icing on shit" (it may look good, but wait until you bite into it!)

With thirty heavy trucks running, mostly off road, I use a lot of recaps. The problem with using recaps in off road applications is that the recaps do not provide the sidewall protection you'll find on dedicated off road tires. Of course you don't get sidewall protection with new heavy truck tires either. Tires like Dunlop MTs and ATs provide good sidewall protection. If for no other reason, I'd stick with new tires for a Discovery.

PS: I vote for Blue's "Grey Poupon on a shit-on-a-shingle sandwich" analogy

I looked at the Hitech retreads quite extensively, but eventually decided it wasn't worth the risk. I bought Dunlop Radial Rover RT's instead. In my size, they were only $76 each... about $25 more then the retreads.

There are lot's fo "generic" MT's out the
