96 Disco with 79K. Check Engine Light came on today. I have searched the archives but couldn't find any info. I looked for the ECU under the passenger seat but didn't find it. I have a CD changer under the seat. I suspect it is going to be an O2 sensor but not sure. Where do I find the ECU and is there a code list on the web somewhere?

Thanks
Jeff

Probably came on because of the 80 service reminder....

Look behind the passenger side kick panel for the brown relay. Insert a straightened paper clip in the small hole under the LR label . There are two metal wires inside that must be touched(connected)by the clip to reset the relay.

Or better yet, wait about five days and see if the "check engine" light goes off on its own. I have a '96 with about the same mileage as yours and that is what just happened. Since the light went back off after three or so "heat/cool" cycles, the engine must think things are OK again.

By the way, don't worry, you are not supposed to have an OBD display under your seat. '96 and later have OBDII and require a computer to read the fault codes.

96 and newer have OBD 2 conection. The ecu connection is located on the drivers side in the footwell just under the steering column. Theres a hole cut in the molding. You'll need an interface cable you can buy from obd-2.com for around $130.00. It comes with the software.

Ok, is it the Amber - Check Engine light, or the Red - Service Engine light? If it is the Red - Service Engine light, passenger side kick panel, little brown/red box, stick paper clip in it, light is for Emissions check up. If it is Amber -Check Engine light, then something might be wrong with your truck and you need to have an OBDII scanner read your codes. The plug in for the scanner is drivers side, under the steering column. You can find scanners online, or go to a local garage and see if they will read codes for you. Codes can be found at http://www.spanishtrailrovers.com

Thanks all. It is the amber check engine light. I am having a hard time finding someone that will pull the codes for me. LR dealer wants an hour labor at $82/hr to pull it. If I cant find someone by Monday guess I'll bite the bullet and go to the dealer.

Jeff,
I purchased an interface cable for $125.00 plus shipping from www.obd-2.com because one trip to the dealer will match that. It's very easy to use. And you'll have it for future use when it comes on again.
