Im in the process of replacing my front cover gasket (97 D1) and I have everything off, except... The lower pully connected to the crankshaft. Land Rover service manual has one of their blasted special tools doing it, but since I dont have one, and not much chance of getting one, Im wondering if anyone can tell me how I can get that lower pully nut loose, and off. Again, its the lowest pully connected to the crankshaft. I have all front cover bolts out, belts, fan out, etc.. Didnt remove radiator, as I seemed to have enough room without doing so. Thanks |

I used a pipe wrench on mine and let it rest against the frame to get the nut loose |

You mean a pipe wrench on the back side of the pulley housing? and then a wrench on the front? Dekkard |

Ahh, it could be different then.. I tried a strp wrench on the backside housing of the pully and that was kind of useless and a knuckle basher when it slips. Someone told me that since its the crankshaft pully, if the truck is in park or gear it shouldnt move, but mine spins freely... THis was not a rover person that said that by the way.. |

I remember seeing something in the Haynes repair manual. All you do is remove your transmission inspection cover plate. Jam something in the flywheel/ ring gear teeth to stop it revolving and this will stop the crankshaft from turning allowing you to crack the front pulley nut. A simple jig can be made that bolts to the bellhousing and jams the ring gear teeth. |

M. Recke has it nailed Alternately - rest a long breaker bar against the frameand with socket on the nut, crank the engine quickly (with coil disconnected) and it will spin the nut loose easily. Bill |

Impact gun off in 3 seconds, 1 hour to R/R the raditor was the down side... Word of caution jamming something against those teeth. It's a bitch to change if you snap a tooth... |
