Hey,

Lets say a guy puts a Safety Devices Expedition rack on his D1, where would he go to find one of those Camel Trophy Placards that mount on the front of the rack? I'm a non-smoker. I don't want to advertise or condone smoking, but that placard is pretty dang cool.

Try www.poseur.com :)

Just joking, don't take that to seriously. I don't know if he is still around but there used to be a guy on ebay that sold a ton of camel trophy stuff, might want to look him up and see if he has any. I can't remember his Ebay ID (maybe someone else around here does) try searching ebay for camel trophy stuff and see if you can figure out who I am talking about.

Eric, shoot me an e-mail. A friend of mine just did the exact same thing, but he made his for a fraction of the cost and it turned out really well. Can't tell it from an original.

www.Poseur.com did not have any of those dang cool Camel Trophy placards. But they had a bunch of big Poseur Brand two ply nylon cord fatty tires. They also had some goofy looking mexican hat called a "G4 Urban Sombraro" by J Peterman.

www.landroverzone.com had some dang cool Camel Trophy placards for $225 bucks (whew!) Cost of entry into the past, when off road adventure had something to do with driving skill and mechanical endurance of the vehicle. Tough call.

On the one hand I could stick the LR adventure rack up there with the green oval for half the price... But what was the point of buying the D1 in the first place?

One could make the arguement that anyone who buys a LR is a poseur... there are many alternative vehicles that have better records of reliability for less money.

I bought mine becuase it seemed to me if they could get those vehicles in the Camel Trophy to do all those crazy things, then the basic vehicle must be pretty tough.

I was just messing with you, I think there is something inherently poseurish about all of us -if anybody around here can say that they never did anything to their truck just for looks they are probably lying or just in denial, my vice is stickers.

And yes, you are right my friend the basic vehicles are tough -you've got to give them some love are they will be quick to bite you in the ass but they are very tough.

Yeah Man,

I saw one of those placards at the MAR. I was thinking it would be cool to hang in the garage next to my beer signs. But over $200 was a bit much.

Good lord, they really want over $200 for those things???? I think I'll stick with stickers as my "poseur-fetish-item" (no "Camel Trophy" or "Special Vehicles" stickers yet though.)

Yeah $225 bucks YIKES!!

But as Carter aptly points out... poseur fetishes have a life of their own. Am I going to let money stand in my way? It could be much worse. I could be trying to figure out how to shoe horn a 454 chevy V8 under the hood... no wait... a 500 cubic inch Caddy motor I think was the claim somewhere on this discoweb.

That project makes $225 seem like the change you find in the couch cushions!!

News Flash: You can't take it with you.

Want a placard? Get one if you can afford it. Want giant tires/neon lights/stickers/big hats/poseur this/poseur that/an oogah horn/ chittychittybangbang wings/blingbling whatevers/GET THEM! Yeah, some may laugh, but we'll all be dead one day, and some will have had more fun on the way to the dirt ranch than others.

Leslie,

I'm having Carter bumped off about five years after he gets his first big money job. I'll sob at the funeral and be the first to fill my Hefty Bag with his dough. THEN, wings, here I come!

You don't think I'm that dumb do you Karen??? There are gonna be armed guards, electric fences, air patrols, all kinds of stuff to keep you away from my money. You will get to sob for me 3 miles away in a warehouse as you watch me getting buried on closed-circuit TV.

Just as an FYI. I tried selling a "The Great Adventure" ( a Camel Trophy book) to the guy and the check that he sent for payment bounced which in turn cost me about $30 in bounced check fees. I tried and tried to contact the guy but never got a response after the bounced check. So BUYER BEWARE. (This was around last fall)

Chris,

Are you talking about Graham from Land Rover Zone? I had some dealings with him and they went just fine. It's a drag when things go like they did for you, bummer.

I bought a shirt from LandRoverZone.com, and I met the guy there at MAR. Everything went great with the shirt, and he was a great guy to talk to there at MAR.

Why not make a Placard copy and put on a large disco web sticker? My guess is that placard better be tough enought to take a branch head on, might be in a good spot to take a hit. I have limb risers on my rack and the center two lights still take a beating.

speaking of petzls Leslie, Wal*Mart has some good knock-offs for around $15 bucks a friend has one and the beam of light from the LEDs is just about identical to my petzl. Might not be as durable but for $15 I think it might be worth it, those things are invaluable when it comes to recoveries/maintenance after dark.

Ho,

LOL got an extra 2500 for a worthless domain name. I guess you could squat on it with the deliusion that FORD / Rover may decided to rekindle the Camel Trophy Challenge. IMO I think Smoking Joe went under when the first tobacco lawsuit lost
