Damn! A month already and still going? I know there is a rover dealer over there somewhere:)

Which island(s) are you on? I was there a couple of times and did some interesting trips near the edge of the islands (Mali and the big one) to see blow-holes or whatever, and there's often a maze of cliff- or beach-side trails. I only had a rental truck 4x4, and there were a few sections I wouldn't attempt, partly because it wasn't my truck, and partly because its not a rover and I wasn't familiar with its limitations. And I didn't want to fuck up my vacation!

I know for sure you can drive over the lava up to where its pooring into the see, from the east side, and that's a bit of fun too. But I walked that one, since I only had a passenger car at that moment (although it did quite well).

Sorry I can't be more specific, but Good luck!

Over on the Series board with Rovers North there is a person called Kona Coffee Rover who is on one of the islands. Might be a resource for you.

Jmon, how long will you be in Hawaii? I'll be heading that way on Nov 29th for the Alabama vs Hawaii football game. Then I plan on sticking around for a few days, cruising between a few of the islands. I obviously won't be bringing my Disco with me but I wouldn't mind meeting another Rover fan while I'm there.

The Big Island (Hawaii) probably has the most off-road opportunities due to its sheer size and varied topography. The Waipio Valley (sp?) on the north end has a 4x4 trail through the rain forest that's supposed to be pretty awesome. You might also try Parker Ranch, if you can get permission to go on there. Otherwise, for some really rough terrain, you can take off across one the vast lava fields -- but you might destroy your tires in the process.

How are you getting your rig from island to island?

Jmon-
I take it you're on O'ahu. If the LR dealer there is of little assistance, you might want to talk to the guys at the Maui Off-Road Center in Pearl City (don't let the name fool you, the company started on Maui and opened a Honolulu branch over ten years ago). MORC does alot of the truck mods (mostly American) on the island and are probably your best bet on getting "plugged into" the local 4x4 scene.

I'm back in the islands quite a bit but I don't recall seeing many LR owners who would be classified as "enthusiasts". Mostly mall transportation types. But good luck and let us know how you fare.

Jmon,

I think you said you were going to Kauai. Great island. There is a trail there called Powerline Trail that runs from the North coast back to near the middle of the island. It is fun. Problem is that they disable the 4X4 Low of all the damn rental Jeeps. you should be OK, just make sure that it has not rained for a few hours. This is hard to do this time of year, but still :)
