I have a 96 D1 and I am getting ready to replace my cats with some universal cats from Summit and replace my muffler with a series 50 flowmaster. I was wondering if anyone has removed the resonator(the little muffler in the back) and replaced it with a plain pipe. Any thoughts?

very common to do...

no noticible noise increase or performance difference.

Do it. Doesn't make a damn bit 'o difference. It's cheaper to fix, and hides better than the stock shit.

I was forced to remove mine since I ran it over backing out of a rut at MAR. I gives the engine a meatier sound but not a louder one.

Tommy,

i chopped off the resonator on my rangie, and the bitch would drone on the highway driving me nuts.
it did become noticeably louder. No performance increase at all, just plain irritation.

If you hack it off get a extension from a kragens or something the reason if you don't the drone that peter hears is because all the noise is trapped under the body if the noise is all the way at the end of the vehicle there is no vibrating sounds off the body. I had that problem before I could get to kragens went there got the pipe no more noise sounds close to stock

Nomenclature:

Is the resonator the small oval piece right before the bumper...about a foot long?

Pretty sure that is correct. It is near the end of the tailpipe.

I agree with peter, mine is off and I have a pipe going all the way to the back and still have a way less then good sounding exhaust, kinda like a honda with no exhaust at highway speeds

I did it. I also added a piece at the end to replace the resonator. It is louder, however, I just like the sound of Flowmasters. I would recommend this setup to anyone with an aging D1 exhaust.
