I have seen about a dozen comercials for the new 4 runner and they keep getting worse.

these are the ones where sir edmund Hillery is talking over them and they make it sound like this new toyota can drive to the top of mt everest and using its new decent technology back down the other side?

the best one is where they have a buncha 2 second clips of it driving over big boulders, the truck is bouncing and the tires are coming a couple feet off the ground tires spinning like mad then bang down and stop spinning.I can tell you why the clips are 2 seconds those front cv's went bang i'd bet.

dont get me wrong toyota builds one of the best quality products your money can buy,its just I always am amazed how they and other companys do stuff on comercials that will destroy your truck in real life.

I would think a guy would have a valid point but they would claim the whole small print proffesional driver on a closed course routine

Same thing with the Xterra commercials. The truck is going like a bazzilion miles an hour through mini craters with a kayak on it...ok.

Don't forget the standard Hill Start Assist and optional rear air suspension on the new 4runner.

hill start assist?

decent control?

ETC?

Why not just get a remote control 4X4 or just go with virtual reality? It'd be cheaper...

And the worst part about it all is, the people these systems are designed for (soccer moms and the like) either won't know they have it or know how to use it. I see this crap every day (I'm a Toyota Tech by the way), the more complicated this stuff is the less customers know about it. God forbid they ever read thier owner's manual!!!
Some people would just be better off riding bicycles to work.

"hill start assist?"

is this for chicks that cant drive stick?

"decent control?"

all toyotas have this standard thats why a 5 year old toyota is still worth something and land rovers bring crappy resale

"ETC?"

think this means the cup holders are good with even "extra tippy cups"

"Why not just get a remote control 4X4 or just go with virtual reality? It'd be cheaper..."

because toyota knows that remote control 4x4's dont care many groceries

ETC = Extra Tough Cargo-area (for all those groceries)

I own a D2 and some of these posts hit a little close to home. I have hill decent but prefer engine braking. I have ETC and like the system with the CDL engaged. The only thing I don't have is the remote control.

LOL Chris. Not knocking the DII (or Toyotas for that matter) - just think all this "assist" stuff is getting a little ridiculous. Now you have hill start assist, cruise control, and hill descent control. Break out that remote and you can sit on a lawn chair and watch it all happen.

at least toyota and land rover havent put automatic moving steps like the navigator ,my point is at some point you lose some of the fun.

the fun factor can be pretty high with a stock unlifted truck that has open diffs and stock tires.

my set up trail truck can be pretty boring because with gears, lockers, lift, and flex you can just point it wherever you want and it just chuggs right through no matter what stupid line you pick.

stockers take some brain power and driving skill where with mods or electronic wizardry any guy with a wallet can be a hero

Funny that decent control thingy. In every other facet of motor-sports (or Moto-recreation shall we say) you are taught that engines are for going and brakes are for stopping. not in four wheeling and mall crawling I guess.

just thinking aloud....sorry...

Blue, I know your not knocking them but I get a sense that its my vehicle that does all the wheelin' and I'm just along for the ride. For amateur drivers or the basic soccer mom these systems are a Godsend, but for your hardcore wheeler or weekend warrior they are nothing more than fluff. Although the ETC is a fine system... have I said that yet?

My dad has an '01 D2 and the ETC and HDC are pretty cool. The HDC started out on the Freelander and it has no low box so they put that in as a way to help slow it down. And when the D2 came out with ETC, why not put HDC on it, the system for it is basically all there? It may be a little gimmicky, but it works quite well. I thought the comercials were cheese, but they will definately sell 4-Runners with it. All the soccer moms going to Everest....
