Where to get the washer that needs to be discarded every oil change? Is it really necessary to replace it every oil change? Thanks for your help.

It will drip after a few changes if you don't replace it. It gets galled.

Go to a real autoparts store. Buy a fiber drainplug washer that fits your drain plug. That will last a few years.

If you don't have an extra you can anneal the copper washers and reuse them. As long as they don't have cracks in them at least.

I got a 22mm copper washer at Pep Boys. It fits and has not leaked.

The only thing I've gotten for free from Land Rover was a handful of copper washers. Try your dealer, you never know.

P.S.-I've used the same washer for 4-5 oil changes on occasion. Couldn't really say it leaked any more than usual. However, it does seem ludacris to neglect such a small item. Later.

I very seldom replace the washer when changing oil. I put some silicon seal on the threads and reuse the same washer. (I know I'm cheap) No leaks or problems. Additionally, I don't have to tighten the plug excessively to prevent leaks and reduce, for me eliminate, the risk or a stripped drain plug. I've been doing it with equipment for years, originally due to the lack of available washers in the field, eventually due to effectiveness. I will replace the washer if it becomes severely gouged though or if I have one available. (Well maybe I'm not that cheap)

When you torque down on the drain bolt, the threads take the brunt of the force. A copper washer is softer than the threads so it will give in before the threads. Once the washer has been compressed to its maximum, the only thing left to bear the torque are the threads. Also, the washer tends to push back against the bolt head which helps decrease the likelyhood of it vibrating loose. I change mine at every oil change because on a previouse car i never changed the washer until about 70k miles, when I stripped the threads. Most rover sales places sell them for about $1.50 (big ripoff).

I haven't replaced mine yet in the 55K miles I've had my truck and I religiously change my oil every 3K miles. The only thing I have found though is the one time I had the dealer work on my truck, they changed the oil and they torqued it so tightly that I thought I'd never get it off. I still question their wisdom there.

If it leaks, replace it by all means. If it doesn't leak, why fix what isn't broken?

But, that sort of a comment implies that you are as fastidious with your truck as I am with mine. Every night when I return home, the bonnet is opened. EVERY time I get fuel, the bonnet is opened and the fluids checked. EVERY time I discover a new leak, the source is found and fixed. If you pay attention to what your truck is telling you, you shouldn't need to replace the washer every time you change the oil.
