i just noticed a bad smell coming from my 97 disco today and i looked under it to check it out. i found that i had a leak coming from where the rear driveshaft goes into the differential (is that the 3rd member?). it looks also like the fluid has been slung all over the rear axle from when ive been driving around. what could be my problem and how much money am i looking at spending. also could this be a simple D.I.Y. job or should i go to a shop?

pinion seal is no longer sealing. its simple with the right tools if its your first DIY then I'd just take it in its a cheap part shouldent be more then 1/2hour labor

You have to drop shaft, remove pinion flange, yank old seal, install new seal, replace flange, replace shaft, top off diff fluid. May be a problem for you if you have the rotoflex and a stuck centralizing peg - in that case, maybe the shop with the right tools would be better idea (unless you're stubborn like me). If you do it yourself, give me a shout...

won't check dweb again until Monday, but my cell # is 602-290-0595

I just installed HD rear half shafts to a 98 diso1. The driver's side shaft was dry with mild surface rust on the outside 8 inches of the shaft. When I removed the passenger side, or shorter shaft, about 1/4 cup of oil came pouring out from around the shaft, which was obviously wet and well-lubricated. Why the assymetry here and which one is normal? What could be the problem?

The springs on the passenger side have sagged more than the driver side, I would say a fat wife is to blame.

Groverrover - check for a blocked breather line first before replacing the pinion seal - very common problem - if the breather is plugged, and pressure that builds up in the diff has to get out - usually through an axle seal or the pinion seal.

What on earth could springs have to do with this?
