I've been running dino in my 96 Disco and wanted to try syth this time. Mobil 1 in Au is about $49 to $56 AUD for 5 litre container. Discos need more so I have to buy 2. I ended up buying Penrite HPR 10 - 10W/40 a semi synth oil due to finances , I checked Penrites Oil recommendation manual and it lists it as suitable for landrover Discos 96 on. So after filling , I read the small print on the container recommending that it should be used for tarmac travel and NOT recommended for 4WD off road use. So the Penrite manual should have read Landrover Discovery '96 on "Soccer Mom" edition only!!! . |

First, that's what happens when you cheap out and don't get Mobil 1. Second, I think it's BS. Just run it like any other oil and watch it. When it gets dark, change it. Typically I see claims that 4x4 specific oils are made for higher loads (like during hill climbing) and account for lot of idling time. How the formula would be different from "conventional" oil beats me, so I can't really imagine a "road only" oil. Plus I've been using conventional oil both on and off-road and with good results. Thirdly, WTF do I know, maybe somebody else will shed more light on this. |

Because if you go offroading with motor oil that is not intended for offroad use, you can ruin your piston return springs and prematurely wear your muffler bearings. BEWARE! |

Hey this is great. Lets debate the relative merits of AMSOIL, SYNTEC and MOBIL 1! How much zinc and how much ash do you look for, do you look for a Group III or Group IV base, or does it have to be PAO base stock? |

Jason, I looked in Haynes repair manual and searched the net and can't find any reference to the Muffler bearings. It must be a add on at the 100km service. LOL |

Piston return springs and muffler bearings? Owning a british vehicle sure is tough, the worst thing I had to worry about in my old Delorean was making sure the Flux Capacitor didn't lose it's charge. |
