Noticed my tranfer case is leaking (96 Disco manual), it seems to be seeping from the side cover plate, is this a gasket or RTV? I think there is also a leak at the front of it. Is this an easy DYI repair or should I try an additive/ stop leak. Advice appreciated.

I thought mine was leaking from the cover plate. I replaced it with gasket from Rovers North.(original only had rtv as a gasket) In the end it wasn't the cover plate that was leaking. I think it is a bolt. I have given up on trying to fix that leak for now. Best advice is to clean it up real good and identify where the leak really is coming from.

Good Luck

But if you fix the leak how will you know when to refill it?

(some bolts(/stud) go through the casing and reach the oil. If not put in with locktite it will leak - usually this one comes from the front of the t-box, between the gearbox and the t-box´s front output casing)

Thanks Hendrik, there seems to be leakage through the bolts, I might try pulling them out and sealing the threads with loctite and see how that goes.
The bolts seam a bit tight and I fear shearing the heads off, do you suggest using an impact/socket to crack the bolts loose?

FWIW, my '95 D1 had a leak that looked like oil was coming from several of the lower cover plate bolts, but in reality was actually coming from a bad seal in the spead sensor and trickling down the side of the case to the lower bolts.

(if in original setup the relevant bolts should have gotten the locktite from Rover. That makes the 6 Rear-PTO-Cover (left side of handbrake drum) that hard to turn, even if cracked loose. If the t-box was once removed (or sth else was done to it) then the above becomes important).
Do what Todd and Brad suggested, too.
(And check if the air-vent-hoses are not blocked).

Not sure about the crack-loose thing. Inclined to think that if you shear the head off by hand the impact wrench will do the same. Its a steel bolt in aluminium casing, the few times I worked on the t-box an impact w. was never needed.
