I removed oil pan on 96 disco and found a small cylindrical nut, it is only about 5 mm long and has a ID of about 3mm with inside tread. It looks like brass that is chromed on outside. I doubt it would be an engine component due to its size. What the hell could it be? Please put my misery to an end and tell me its not a vital part or something.

Sound like the brass insert on the Rubber Valve Cover Gasket but that is not threded?

Mystery, there was also some white substance coating the thread, like a silicon RTV.
I am the second owner and it seems the pan gasket was previously done. maybe some thing fell in before reassembly? The engine is running fine.
There will always be the thought in the back of my mind though that something is amiss.

It sounds like it might be the spacer that goes where the cooling line shares a bolt with the pan....

FWIW....

Leslie, it isn't, it is too small for that. Mine is a 5sp manual, I know the spacer you are taking about, and it was there where it was supposed to be. This thing is like the screw on connector end of a spark plug, only the outside is not tapered like a sparkplug's and is smaller in size.

Hmmm......

Is it the end off of a retractable magnet, like the ones on a "extendable antenna" used for retrieving dropped nuts in hard-to-reach places?

Good thinking Leslie, I'm going to check it out and see if its magnetised. It does seem strange that it just sat on the bottom of the pan and was not flushed out in the 3 oil changes I have done since I bought the Truck!
