Hi. Over the last 8000 or so miles, my vehicle has slowly started "lurching" when I press on the accelerator. I have a '96 5spd disco, and it seems the most obvious around 2000-2600 rpm. Say I'm in there, going 55 and I press down the accelerator the whole way. It seems to just sort of lose power for little breaks, like 1/4-1/2 second at a time. I'm no mechanic so I don't really know the technical term for this.

Does anybody have any suggestions? Anything I can try first on my own?

I'll ask this in another thread, but does anybody know of a good LR mechanic in/around Vancouver or Vancouver Island?

Oh well, no great ideas so far I guess.

I was driving it last night and I realized the power losses are really only momentary - maybe 1/5th of a second. Not 1/2 a second like I'd written above. If that makes a difference.

Im thinking that it might be a fuel delivery problem.

Not a Disco specific diagnosis, but my first (and cheapest) guess with what you described would be the fuel filter.

probably in need of a good old fashioned "tune up"

spark plugs, wires, new fuel filter , maybe air cleaner, good time to check your surp belt. give the car some injector cleaner and an oil change.

Thank you everybody for your ideas. I hope it's one of the simple/cheap fixes...

First, I'm a Disco newbie but I have a little experience building an EFI system(currently in the middle of a DIY system).

- (anyone) does Andrew's vehicle utilize a TPS(throttle position sensor)?

- Does the problem only occur while the throttle is physically being opened?

The reason I ask is that, if equipped with a TPS(most are), and the problems occur only while opening the throttle, it can be indicative of a bad TPS. TPS units can get dead/bad spots in the range of motion, thus telling the ECU that the throttle is being advanced, then suddenly at idle position(or some other incorrect voltage), then advanced again, etc.

Andrew, for what it's worth, I recently have had intermitant probs during cruising, and increasing speed on my 5sp '96. Mine was a Vacuum advance unit fault. In that when giving the gas pedal a nudge I was experiencing flat spots and hicups. On inspection the unit was jammed inside thus not altering the ignition timing. I was amased as to the dealership price for such a simple device, but the dealer did get me a reconditioned one.
they are an easy install.

Ken,

Seems to me that a TPS error would trigger the OBD and acitivate the light.

Now I am thinking about what Andrew said up top about his 5 speed disco during acceleration. If he is not getting any codes, I would start thinking about clutch or transmission.

Thinking aloud,

Paul

A good shop is Gord'n Parrot in the Seattle area.
Maybe Ray Wood at Wise Owl in Vancouver knows a good local shop for you in B.C.
Wise Owl is a Series only shop in Vancouver.

Well, I bought a fuel filter and will probably also do plugs/wires at the same time, hopefully in the next week. If those don't work, then it's time to call a professional.

Thanks eric for your suggestions on mechanics, and mattmoe for your offer of helping me put in the fuel filter!

Update: I just put in a new fuel filter and it didn't fix the problem. I bought some STP injector cleaner stuff I'll dump in the fuel tank but I've never had faith in solutions like that.

I guess next is magnecor wires and spark plugs, after I look at the plugs I already have.

Thanks again to everybody for your suggestions.

Another Update:

I bought NGK (don't remember the model) plugs and installed them last week while I was waiting for my magnecor leads. While changing out the plugs, one of my original wires broke into 3 pieces in my hand! I got a cheap wire and replaced that one, and my lurching problem seemed 95% solved. Yesterday I put in the Magnecor wires and the problem still SEEMS solved although I only drove it a couple miles to test.

One strange thing though - as I came back from my test ride the vehicle started stalling. It wasn't doing this before. Does this mean that maybe I did something wrong while installing the spark plug wires or would these be unrelated?

Make sure your pressed the wires completly onto the plugs. When I changed out my plugs I really had to fight a couple of the wires to get them to completly seat onto the plug. Maybe you left a couple of wires loose and thats causing the stalling. Just a thought.

When installing your plug wires for ease of installation and removal/reinstallation in the future...apply dielectric grease to the inside of the boot (do booth ends).

Thanks. I'll buy some dielectric grease and check the connections when I apply it.

ANOTHER update: turns out my idle problem was likely caused by having partially knocked off the air breather intake from the engine while putting on the cables. Seems to be running fine now. I love simple solutions...
