Just installed HD Half shafts on a Disco1(98). When the old driver's side shaft was removed, it was dry with a small amount of surface rust on it. When the passenger side shaft came out, about 1/4 cup of oil poured out and that shaft was obviously wet and well lubricated. Why the assymetry here, and which one is normal? About 1 year ago the rear diff was replaced with a Detroit by the dealer.

I´d guess the seal that prevents the axle oil to flow into the hub was damaged on the right side by the dealer. Not necessarily a bad thing ;) :

The seal was introduced by Rover (@ mid 90ties?) to keep the hubs from dropping oil onto the brake discs because no oil reaches the hubs. Usually they succeed in that. The drawback is that Rover apparently used cheaper seals from that time (no more the RTC3511) and that the hub bearings die prematurely from lack of lubrication (hence the rust (and increased wear) on the halfshaft´s splines, too).
