In my Discovery 2 I have had 2 serpentine belts go in less than 50,000 miles. It seems that after I go offroading, (where I get mud spatter up into the hood); I get a slight humming sound from the belt around the alternator. (Cleaning the engine does not get rid of the sound.) The humming sound gets more apparent when I step on the gas pedal. Then after about 5,000 miles the belt breaks. The second time the belt broke the Idler pulley had to be replaced also. On both of these breaks I thought the belt was loose but I was told that everything was alright (by Land Rover Tech). Is this humming sound normal? Are the belt breaks related to this humming or is it just a coincidence? |

Don't know what it could be. |

Does the belt look shredded? Might try checking all the pulley wheels and see if anything is seized. I have had air pumps on other cars seize and the V-belt just vanished almost instantly. The serpentine is bigger and stronger so perhaps it lasted a little longer. -jeff |

I checked the belt and it looks like it is in good shape. It has been about a week since I went offroading and the sound is not as loud. I sprayed a little WD 40 around the pulleys and it seemed to help. It only make a slight humming sound when I accelerate moderately before the car is warm. After that I really don't notice anything. |
