D2 with 48000 miles, have had all scheduled maintance done. Have changed oil every 3-5K miles with Castrol syntec. Recently the truck started sounding like a diesel when started and during initial acceleraton after sitting cold. Noise seems to go away when accelerating after truck warms. No real tapping noise at idle, but does sound like a bearing needs to be lubricated somewhere near the front of the engine. Noticed large plumes of smoke at night in trailing vehicles headlights when punching into passing gear at 70-75 MPH. Did this several times as a test and smoke on every occassion. I will soon be out of warranty. What questions should I be asking the dealer so they don't blow me off until I am out of the warranty period? Thanks.

Has performance been materially affected? Gas mileage, acceleration, etc?

Sounds like it might be a timing or fuel injector issue to me, rather than valve train, although it is making some curious noises, but they could be tied to timing.

Let's get the basics out of the way. Last plug/wire change? I won't embarrass myself asking about cap/rotor:-)

STOP driving it tow it into the shop if the miles getting there will take it out of warranty... Dont belive the SM when he tells you to drive it in we will adjust it... Trust me i got burned once and several others have posted similar

Murphys Law says it will die hard 1 mile after it is out of warranty and LRNA does not give in a bit...
