I am thinking of putting a mp3 player in my 98 discovery. I was wondering if there is a kit available so the buttons on the dash will still be functional.

there is no kit that I am aware of.. if you replace the head unit you will loose the dash controls.. unless someone else has seen some thing else. I replaced my head unit and never found anything....

Do a search within this site...maybe in the archives now...
I remember seeing some ideas that spoke to that topic when I was replacing my stereo this summer. It seemed to involved and cost prohibitive to move forward with. Most newer head units have wireless remotes anyway. Much more convenient.

YES, there are several ways to keep the use of your dash buttons. You can contact a high end audio store that is willing to tackle the job, but it will cost you. Or you can look for models with kits to incorperate the buttons. I am not sure if any MP3 players exist, but I know that some companies offer CD players with the option. Pioneer and Alpine I believe do this. Again, you will pay for it. Look into a Sony ES MP3 player with a joystick remote. It is wireless and you can mount it on your steering colum or center console and it will performe all of the functions of the player.

I put a Sony MP3 in my 95 Disoc with a wireless remote. The little credit card remote lays on the console and I can use it as fast as look around the steering wheel (can LR say ergonomics?) for the right button. Admittedly I never got used to the dash controls.

MP3 is the only way to go!!!!! 10 hours on one CD is awesome. Be careful about the hook up. A VW harness is requiired to adapt and new speaker wire must be pulled. Keeping the subwoofers in line is tough to do.

This is a little crazy but this is what I did, I built a computer that fits under the driver seat, it plugs into a power inverter under the pass seat behind the cd changer, the computer has an s-video out and connects to a 7 inch wide screen which is mounted in front of the sunroof controls, this displays the windows media player (mp3s) and also dvd and gps navigation, the dvd rom is also mounted under the pass seat, now here was the tricky part, how to get the audio from the computer to play through the factory system, I took the cd changer apart and found the left and right channels on the circuit board, I soldered two rca connectors to the board and ran out the back of the unit, then connected them to the speaker out from the computer, I put a blank cdr in the #6 slot of the changer, now to select the computer audio I simply toggle to cd on the factory head unit and select cd 6 and voila computer audio through the factory system, with full use of the dash controls, the reason for the blank cd is I couldn't get the audio to pass through without a cd selected and if a regular cd is playing you hear both the cd and the computer, so with the blank cd the audio comes through perfect and you get a ERR readout on the cd player. I dont reccomend trying this unless you enjoy frustation, but the end result is really great. (alot of trial and error) Navigation is a fun feature too.

You can keep the buttons,
its quite simple,
theres a box that hooks up to the factory swithces, you hide it behind the dash.

then theres an IR sender that you sneak in somwhere.

That box is then programmed with the new head units remote to control the aftermarket head unit

not sure of the price, and you can hide the IR in the window switch controls easily in a disco

It is made by a company called PAC, you need part number SWI-X, but the one for rover works for all rovers. I dont have a source to purchase one directly as an end user but if you are interested i can see what i can do for you cost wise

heres their web page

i have a 95 discovery and i attempted to put my kenwood excelon cd player in, and for some reason when i cut the factory wire harness off my dome lights went out and i could not get my kenwood to work. after many of my buddies looked at it and mingled with it i ended up putting the old harness and tape/am fm unit from land rover back in, but to no avail. all the thing does now is the display light blinks on and off, my clock has also stop working and my dome lights still do not work. a friend of mine did the same thing to his disco, so if there is anybody out there that can help me i would greatly appreciate it..thanx

This is the way I installed MP3 in my Disco.
Using a Rio $49.00 Player From Bestbuy or you could use any line level audio source, these units have 2 RCA Analog INPUTS $89.00

Rio & interface total cost $150.00
