Just for shits and giggles I went to www.toyota.com and built a new 4Runner to "match" up with a new Discovery. This basically meant building the highest trim level (Limited) and adding on a few other goodies. Then I did the same with an '03 Discovery.

Option for option ONLY, a comparably equipped 4Runner is $40,588.

I used an S Discovery with comparable options. I wanted to avoid the 18" wheels and ACE as there is no comparable on the 4Runner side. Even with the dual-sunroofs it was only $36,995!

Now I don't think even the most ardent Roverphile would argue Toyota's reputation for putting together a long lasting, trouble-free product. But there is little doubt in my mind that the Disco would OWN it off-road especially over the long run. It also has a longer warranty, better dealership service and sales ratings, and it's even CHEAPER!

I bet Toyota hopes that no one realized that they have priced themselves up to and above the LUXURY nameplates.

It's a cool truck, but make mine the Brit!

Another factor to consider, in that pairing, is do you fit? In the previous generation 4Runner, I was always shy head room; had to drive with my head on the tilt. Uncomfortable to say the least. This new addition is only marginally better, and all that plastic cladding gives me the vapors. I'm 6'5", and fitting in a Land Rover has never been a problem.

A co-worker of mine was calling me Rockafeller because I bought a 03 disco Till I pointed out that his Derango cost more than my disco and was half the truck.

PS By half I meen that that is my opinion and I have not preformed any tests nor have any substantiated data to back my opinion up.

Ha Ha Ha Just a fun tease to MV and DEE.

Just for giggles, I figured I'd ask. Why are you comparing the top of the line 4-runner to the bottom barrel Discovery?

Tom,
Comparable options, most comparable price. I know the Land Cruiser is the real Discovery rival, but it's the new 4Runner that is claiming to climb Everest and has hill-decent, etc.

Mostly, I was just killing time until 5:00! :-)

Ross,
I know what you mean. Nothing worse then someone looking at you like you are a rich guy when their $40k Suburban costs more then your $30k BMW.

Tom,
I thought he was comparing the bottom of the line Disco because that is the only one that you can get w/ 16" rims :)

Yeah Man,

Since I am 6'4" and 255, I have a difficult time getting into an Xterra or 4runner. I actually considered going "rice" before I bought the Pig. Then one day during a www search of Discovery's, I found this crazy place. I have not been the same since.

Funny thing about price comparison....A co-worker paid over 30K for a new 2WD Tahoe.

why drive nails with a golden hammer

I agree about the matching of the options, except there is no way to get a straight axel in a 4runner.

truth be told IFS trucks are all junk off road...yes even a hummer...but the portals help

To my knowledge, Toyota Japan still offers a straight axle on the Hi-Lux Surf (Japanese Market 4-Runner).

Also, the LandCruiser 90 series Prado would be a much better price/performance match to the Disco, with a much stiffer suspension. However, I am not aware if they are offered in the states. The fullsize 80 or 100 series LandCruisers would be much more in line with the 03 Range Rovers, including the price.

Also, having put the HMMWV through it's paces in it's actuall roll, the IFS performed very well with none of the low-clearnace problems that most IFS trucks suffer from.

I like the Toyota Hi Lux trucks, but not enough to buy one. I'm a Disco man throug and through, long ass and all.

On the HMMWV, I have only a couple of big problems. First, and in my opinion the most hampering, is the wheelbase. 130" is too much for a dedicated off roader. Now, being in the military, I understand why this is the case. The HMMWV is kind of like a military pickup truck. Say what you will, but you can load those things till the cows come home and still have room left.

The second problem is going to have to be reliability and durability. The underbits are a bit fragile for my tastes. I've seen too many high centered HMMWVs busting oil pans and bending framework, on hard packed earth.

Now, a SWB HMMWV with some serious skid plates? Naa, I'd still take a Defender.

Cheers,

Kennith

6'-4" Paul??? You sure your not stretching that a little? And 225, you're being way to kind to yourself!!

Kennith,

FWIW, that 130" wheelbase on HMMWV makes a whole lot of sense when your in an top-heavy armored version with a .50cal mgun on top. The only HMMWV I've ever seen roll was when a guy tried to come down a 45 degree sand dune sideways. The other nice factor about the HMMWV is the ability to beat the hell out of it and still have it running.

Now for a real junk IFS truck, you would be talking about Toyota's MegaCruiser. I don't know if they ever sold in the states, but it's a cheaply made copy of the hummer.

I just drove my new series 2 truck of a 1 metre concrete culvert - thats right a dead right angle drop from the tarmac into a concrete drain. Some of the concrete is now missing and the disco is sweet. Thought I was going to stand the bastard on its nose - the amount of wheel travel and articulation for a "standard" suspension is quite amazing. It did it with ease
