You missed the auxillary Union-Jack sticker keenly placed next to the side-marker.

Sorry guys, my message didn't come through entirely as planned. I had written more but accidently deleted it before posting. Long day.

What was meant to be said was essentially this:

This is a photo of my younger brother Taylor and his new Disco. He really enjoys his truck, and no, it's not his mothers. He traded in a j@@p he had won for this, and made a great step up. He lives in Wisconsin right now and thus the point of my question - I was trying to ask if anyone has any suggestions for how he could get his truck a little more dirty! I live in CA now and am trying to help Taylor find places that don't include parking lots, race tracks or farm fields that he can explore. Anything, even fire roads, rustic dirt roads, access routes, etc. Wisconsin isn't an offroaders dream, but I have to imagine there are more areas to go than just the Pipeline in northern WI. That was all.

I must say though, some of the posts above weren't very nice in response! Yes, the truck is his, yes the mud was real.

LOL...sorry Jason. Kinda funny now that you elaborated. But wasn't questioning whether the mud was real...just the splash pattern on it looks wierd to me. That's all. I've never seen mud splash forward of the tire like that and then arch backward like that. I brought it up because I was just reading a recent LRO magazine and they had an article on the advertising done on the Discos since 1990 and one of the ads they showed, they actually sprayed mud onto it but it didn't look right.

Oh well, sorry. No hard feelings.

All,

I suppose he was turning the wheel to the right. That would let the mud on the front rotating surface of the tire spray the bodywork as well as the top. Also it dosn't look like the rears were in the goop. Looks like he was just having fun getting muddy. I do that sometime on private land, just sit there in 2nd low than gun it. Just a big boys way of playing in the mud. :)

Sorry, though, I don't know of any areas around there.

Cheers,

Kennith

He could check out the pipline up in Nicolett Nat. Forest there are a lot of trails up there. Also the owner of Lake Geneva race way has some acres he allows 4 wheeling on, kinda small but some very decent terrain, I think there is a charge, not sure though.

Hey Jason - don't sweat it. This is not exactly the serious discussion part of discoweb. But you have to admit, your first posting was inviting open season on that photo!

Maybe also try posting in the 'trail information' section? There must be lots of places to get muddy in Wisconsin - maybe try the Wisconsin Four-Wheel Drive Association? Glad to hear that you have another LR in the family!

Also, I do honestly think that the CT sticker is a bit poseur-ish for a stock disco, but that's just me!

"Wisconsin isn't an offroaders dream"

well if you ignore the parking lots and construction sites as wheeling places you might see the light

wisconsin has thousands of miles of state and federal roads/2tracks that will sink that stocker so deep it never will come home.

call the state forest information lines and say you are looking for "rustic roads". mention wheeling and they will tell you they have no such places

black river falls offroad recreation area would be a good place to start

Muskyman, thanks for the info! finally what we had been looking for. He's been to the Pipeline with CLRC and to the Lake Geneva raceway park. He/I were really looking for more rustic 2-track routes somewhere in the state. Do you have any suggestions where to start looking to access some of these 2-tracks?

Thanks to the others as well, no harm done, all in good fun! I gave Taylor the CT sticker which I got from a CT vet while in Moab. Not to make a short story long, but that was also the trip to Moab in which I rolled my Disco... I now have a NAS D110 so I'm doing fine, but that roll was pretty narly. Anyway, I didn't have a Rover to put the sticker on after Moab so I gave it to Taylor with the promise he had to put it on as soon as he got his first LR. The rest is history.

Hi Jason!

There certainly is no shortage of dick-heads on this web site, eh? It's such a bummer. Oh, the security of being behind a terminal.

Anyway, I know your brothers and in fact they were over last week to use me (just kidding)for my warm garage and free beer so Taylor could change his oil and also learn more about rover repairs since we're in the process of pulling the motor on a RRC. he talks about you and your 110 all the time. He's a really good kid and very excited about putting all the toys on his new rover but since he's still in college, the only extra money he has is for sticker purchases.

A couple buddies and I took him up to the pipeline in spring to show him around, and there are a bunch of places in upper and western WI, and upper MI but I think he's looking for places closer to Milwaukee. But they really don't exist unless you know somebody.

Well, I hope these few a**holes don't sour you on this site. There's a lot of good info but unfortunately you just gotta look past the fact that some of these guys have a deep need to belittle others so they feel better about themselves.

Later,
Brian Kluge

What I can't figure out is where Brian feels it's ok to type out dick but not ass??? If you're going to have a potty mouth, might as well do it right.
That brings up another gripe of mine. Why do people put in asterisks anyway? As in a**. Because they don't want to be know as someone who types "bad words" but thinks them and come reaaaallly cl*se to typ*ng th*m? Just seems goofy. I think the same way if you type ass or a** because you mean the exact same thing.

Anyway, I know nothing about WI, sorry Jason.

I agree with Alan. What up with your post. I guess you must feel the security of being behind a terminal more than anyone. Posters apologised and Jason acknowledged. It was no harm no foul until your post you just insulted the rest of the posters for apologising for their posts by calling them names.

jason,

close to milwaukee is really easy. go to hartford and introduce yourself to Randy Thomas at performance unlimited. he heads a 4x4 club calledPYT(pound your truck) it has been around for about 15 years and is full of truley hardcore wisconsin wheelers. but take thick skin and a smile these guys make dweb look like a group of prissy ballet dancers.if you think the abuse dished out above is tough wait till you meet these guys with your skinny 235/85's. members of this club have access to some awsome private wheeling venues that will blow your mind. also never let them goat you into leading...but all in all they are a great group of guys that once you get to know them you'l see they are the real deal.

as far as 2tracks black river falls is a great place to start. Get yourself a gazeteer and learn what the legend denotes as 2 tracks and just start looking. the law reads all established 2tracks on state land that are not gated or burmed are open for use by licensed and insured road going vehicles. you will be amazed at ho many and how tough some of these"2tracks" can be

Brian kluge, relax man ...dont forget wheeling and the discussion of is suposed to be fun. and if you really are into it you should know everyone gets stuck and everyone takes alittle shit here and there. hope to meet you on the trail sometime.

Many of the two tracks in the Black River Falls area are now closed. There was a great area on the south of the forest, but they are mostly gated. Many of the other trails are designated ATV trails.

There is mischief to get into in the area, just not as much as you may like.

The Badgerland Club has access to a bunch of private trails near Tomah. They can be fun and cause a bit of metal bending...

john ,
we got stopped there last year by a forest ranger he asked how we got in and we told him he said show me so we led him to the 2 track we took in . last time we went there was a metal gate in the way.

turns out someone was going in with a bull dozer and plowing all the burms flat. now they are putting in gates.

just another example of fucked up logic...charge you in taxes to upkeep and patrol the land but dont let anyone access it?

the truth is the more access to remote areas there is the less stuff like poaching/ilegal logging goes on

lock it all up tight as a drum and the few locals that know the ways in can trap and poach and whatever else they want to do.

I have a couple friends that are wardens in northern WI and they all agree the state is way messed up on the use of PUBLIC land.

up there they have to patrol huge areas of state land that the lumber companies have timber rights too. the lumber companys have convinced the state that free access to these lands would allow people to cut there trees. so the state locks them up tight and spends a shit load to patrol them all in the intrest of private lumber companies.

ahh now for the person in the picture to speak up...wow, who woulda thought that the original posting would cause such an interesting stir!!

I origanally didnt know that my picture was going to be posted here, but it was, and it is a horrible picture...I normally dont stand in front of my truck, splashed with mud, and try to look like a retard, but that is how it turned out...but yes, the truck is mine, fully owned by me, and no im not a momma's boy..that is all taken care of..

As for Brian--he is a great guy, just sticking up for me!! hes got a great truck and has taken me off roading a bunch!

as for all these places in Wisconsin, hopefully I can find something near Southern Wisconsin, but think that is kinda impossible...

Hey Taylor - welcome as well.

Pugsly or anyone else who has a D110...how do you guys like it compared to the D90? Do you get hung up occassionally because of the longer wheelbase? Or is it not that much of an issue?

The shorter wheel base is not always an advantage, just depends on the terrain you are on. I personally like the 110 because it is, to me, much more of an expedition vehicle - you can really haul all your stuff with you, so much more room than a 90.

Biggest thing I run into offroad is not enough rear-axle droop in the 110. The rear Salisbury axle setup is really different from the 90, and it just doesn't articulate as well. That's the big reason I just put in a rear locker - tired of leaving one rear tire in the air spinning because not enough articulation.

I'm about to pull the heads off (maybe next week). I've been chasing a minor overheating problem for a while, and I'm thinking it may be a headgasket allowing combustion gases into the water jacket.

Hey Taylor (and anyone else) - we're going to go play in Moab for New Years, doing the Bill Burke Holidays in Moab Dec 28 - Jan 1. Should be a blast. Great chance to get to know your new disco if you are interested!

Jason's a great guy (and Petra's great, too), we have traded parts and info back and forth quite a bit. He did a great trip into North-West Nevada earlier this year that was fantastic, too.

pugsly,

before you pull the head you may be able to prediagnos this condition by taking a pressure test on the cooling system right after start before the system heats up.

another way is by opening the resevoir and and listening for a gurgeling sound as the combustion pressure vacates into the cooling system

good luck

pugsly,

how does a salisbury setup affect the rear articulation?

Pugsly (Pugsly)
Posted on Wednesday, November 06, 2002 - 02:45 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

I think it is more the load leveler in the center of the axle than anything else, and I still have the anti-roll bars attached as well. The load leveler allows the axle to articulate but not really droop.

Wow, I had no idea my silly posting would generate so much discussion!

As for my 110, I love it to death. I used to have a Disco before the 110 so I'm more-or-less qualified to compare the two. The Disco I had was a 96 manual SE7 so it was posh while also retaining a little sense of driver involvement (having to manually shift). It was wonderfully comfortable, had a SUPER sound system stock, was very quiet, handled great, was fast, and made the transition between on and offroad effortlessly. Also, unlike some Discoveries, I never had a single mechanical problem with mine during the entire 18 months that I had it. I got it at 43,000 miles and when I rolled it had 70,000 miles, so I used it fairly often. It took me across the country, well into the wilds of northern Canada, down the Pacific Coast, and thereafter on about a dozen offroad trips in the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Nevada desert and the areas of Northern CA. Its life was cut short because of driver miscalculation and error, not because of anything it was at fault for.

As for the 110, even while driving the Disco it was always my dream Rover. Not only was it rare it was beautiful too. Originally I had felt that the Disco was a stunning Rover, and I still do, but over time that awe lessened a little. My awe over the beauty of the 110 has never ceased and I doubt it ever will. So, what about it's real qualities as compared to the Disco? Well, the Disco is about as heavy as a 110 if I recall, and it's also very top heavy (ask me how I know). Much about the basic design and set up of the 110 makes it ideal for offroading and expedition driving. The Disco also has a lot more that can break or go wrong, everything from electric seats and windows, to power doors and sun roofs. I know you can opt out of some of those options, but you get the idea. The 110 has almost no power anything. Power steering and brakes, but that's it. The stero sucks, it's more noisey (but not as bad as a 90), has windows that roll all the way down (unlike a 90), and like pugsly mentioned above, it has more room for gear and equipment. Another thing I like about the 110 is that it is ripe for customization of the interior, something that is essential for expedition driving. On my Disco it was pretty much what you see is what you get, unless you were prepared to put some serious time and energy into taking out entire panels and plastic trim pieces. As for offroad ability compared to the Disco or 90? I think in highly technical spots the 90 wins because of its shorter wheelbase, but in every other case offroad I've seen no real difference in the abilities of the 90 versus the 110. In about 25 offroad trips of some form or another in the 110 I have never once gotten into anything that the truck couldn't handle, and we're talking West Coast trails, not flat lands. I've never done any damage to it either, not offroad anyway!! The driver needs to be a little more aware when using a 110 of course as you're hauling around a lot more truck than in a 90, but otherwise other than rockcrawling they are on the same level. Compared to the Disco, the Disco is fairly long as well at a 100 inch wheelbase which can have its own hangups.

Overall, the stereo and ride quality in my Disco was top notch, the over all offroad ability was bar-none, even somewhat stock (I did make upgrades before the roll) and it was truly hard to beat. The 110 is less posh, the stero is for crap, it's a more noisey, but it's hands-down a no-holds, all-out offroad expedition machine with enough space to live in, a roof rack that is frame mounted, and a mechanical set up that is very, very easy to work on (I recall my Disco being a little harder to work on the engine). I could go on and on, but I'll save it for later or for the site I'm *TRYING* to get finished about 110s...

Here are some pics of my old Disco and my current 110 in case anyone is interested:

Sorry Philip, maybe my oversight. I belive on some/many 90s the windows don't roll down, they slide open about 3/4ths. Maybe this is only on soft top models? Do you have a hard top?

Also, I noticed for some reason I kept typing "stero" above, I meant to say "stereo" !!
