[rant_on] Then search again! And when you're done searching this site, go search other web sites. Go find as much info about motor oil as possible, and when you still have questions, come back here and ask. A keyword search on this site for the word "oil" yeilds 1019 hits...START READING! This horse has been beaten to death so many times...yet you choose to kick it. [rant_off] |

Oil is oil. Some of us pamper our babies (synthetic), some people go with inexpensive 'dino' oil. Bottom line, change your oil every 3-6 thousand miles and it doesn't really matter. Spend some extra cash on a nice oil filter and say no to Fram. (Sorry to encourage lame posts everyone, I'm just so happy to be back!) JR |

3-6 thousand miles? isnt that to much, I was thinking more 2.5-3 thousand with a rover |

Thanks for the tidbit Ramsay, already following that rule of thumb. Have a nice day! |

I use the least expensive oil that has the requisite API/SAE ratings. I usually use either whatever Tractor Supply has on sale, or what my bulk supplier will give me the best deal on. Depending upon how mouch you drive your vehicle and how carefully you follow the frequency of oil change recommendations, it can get expensive in a hurry. As I drive almost 100 miles/day and change oil every three weeks, it can and does get very expensive in a hurry. BTW-there are many options for filters as everybody makes one that fits our trucks. |

Paul, I know the gas in my area all comes from the same containers. All the Shell, Arco, Mobil, independents delivery trucks feed off the same big tanks . I was just wondering if it's the same pool in reguard to motor oil, all the same just packaged different?... After the dammage I found when I rebuilt my top end i think im going to a sync blend, Any ideas?... I like the idea of getting it in a 55 drum mucho cheeper than buying it a quart at a time |

i prefer "motor oil" it lasts longer than the bay oil, linseed oil and corn oils that i've tried... haven't got around to experimenting with olive oil yet. popeye |

And using olive oil will also help reduce your rovers cholesterol....... |

Dee: There are only a few refineries left in the US. This number becomes even smaller when one begins to take regional territories into consideration. That said, it stands to reason that there is likely to be very little difference between one oil brand than the next (flame suit on). Now, to antagonize everybody, most of the oil we buy has some degree of re-refined oil in it. All Wal-Mart branded oil is Safety-Kleen re-refined (or it was before Safety-Kleen became big and then became small and then became big). Some may have a different additive package, but again, there is little deviation, especially with API/SAE ratings added in. Without getting into the intricacies of refining, suffice it to say it is cheaper by far to transport crude oil in pipelines and refined oils in trucks. I don't remember the exact number, but for every gallon of crude oil, slightly more than a gallon of refined products are produced. Isn't stoichiometry grand! There is one big deviation from this though, and that is aviation fuel. If you live near an air force base, chances are you will find a refinery somewhat nearby as the fuel consumption of these facilities is so high that usually someone will build a dedicated refinery near the air field. In order for us to conserve our natural resources and limit our dependence upon outside sources, it is absolutely critical that we all do our part to take our used oil to a recycling center so that it can be reintroduced to the market place, rather than burned for less than efficient heat generation, or dumped in our backyards-although I have some neighbors who might just deserve it! As for the 55-gallon drum, I'm not to that point yet! I can still get about a month of my own and customer's oil changes out of a five-gallon pail, but as soon as I can quit this mind numbing, life-sucking day job, I'll need to go to the big cans! Peace, Paul |
