Is it kosher to install GBR axles with the stock drive flange bolts, or should I get new stock ones or some exotic crap?

Thanks,
Bill

The stock one work but I had issues with them coming loose a bunch of times with the detroit and replaced with stainless bolts.

Kyle - Did you use thread lock? I haven't had any issues with the stock bolts with mine.

No matter what, the threadlock is a good idea. When I used the stock bolts without threadlock, they started backing out 10mi down the road. Oil dripping everywhere.
Also, be very careful not to over-torque the stock bolts; they break easily.

I think stock bolts are 10.9, so are pretty damn hard - guess if you put enough torque on -em, they could snap.

BTW - thanks for all the responses.

RVR OVR,

The reason your do not come out is I believe you have ashcrofts flanges (unless you have changed?). GBRs have the issue of backing out.

Bill B,

GCR makes some nice ones.

Yep, I have the ashcroft ones. They don't look any different from the stock rover fronts, though.

Mine have come loose in the rear too. When people have bought replacements bolts to accomodate the GBR drive flanges, how much longer should they be compared to OEM bolts?

Blue, when you snapped that one, had you cleaned of all the previous loctite from the bolt?

I didn't snap it. At first I thought LR dealer did, but upon further investigation I found that the shop that I had replace my rotors snapped it. I talked to the guy (a respectable service man with his own shop, a friend) and he said that he told me about it when it happened. He may be right; I don't remember him saying anything, but he was very cool about it and offered to fix it. Since he has a positive attitude, I'll take care of it, no biggie. I think he snapped it while trying to back it out. Of course, I would have fixed it immediately after it happened, but I am an extraordinarily nice guy...he's just a nice guy.

Chris has seen me snap like 4 in a row on his Defender and I have snapped an inconcievable amount of stock one in the rear of mine ,(Some in Nevada , some in PA , some here some there.)As you can imagine I grew to dislike the stock ones. They treated me bad. :)

Doh - after all this talk, I still snapped one of the little f***kers - while using a torque wrench! Hadn'teven gotten up to 30 ftlbs and it went.

Oh well - 1/2 hours later and with some good cursing the piece finally came out.

Ron - I thought GCR used to sell some special ones, but I couldn't find them on ther site anymore.
