This article raised a good point, I have noticed that my 95 d1 will have a vibration when I let off the accelerator pedal at 75 mph on highways. I feel it in the floor and it sounds like it is located in the center of the truck somewhere. I have a ome lift, which raised the truck about 3 inchs as the stocks springs had 90k when I did the lift. In june of this year I put in a new roto flex on, I had vibes going down long hills, but that solved that problem. By the way I have only noticed this new problem this week, about 4k after replacing the rotoflex. Any ideas?
Thanks Andy Thoma

That is a great article. I took pictures when I installed mine but havn't gotten them developed yet.

If I was to carry the rotoflex shaft as a spare, do you think it would be practical to convert back in the field?

What do you think?

Eric

Eric, it would probably be easier to carry spare uj's and/or a whole uj shaft if you're afraid of toasting the shaft itself. I'd hate to get into all that just as a temporary field fix (in that respect, the roto system is great - it's an easy field replacement). Or you could just drop the shaft and limp home to the cozy garage...

Andy, inspect that rotoflex up close and see if the rubber is cracked or scuffed or if the nut & bolts look like they've been rubbing the flange. You may just be fine with a new roto, but at about $60/per it soon becomes cost effective to change shafts.

Ok got a question.

Did you have a whole new driveshaft built or just a U-joint flange fitted to the stock drive shaft, don't know if thats possible.

If you had a new drive shaft built how did you get around using the adaptor plate at the e-brake drum?

If you had a new drive shaft built did you use a '98 Disco rear driveshaft flange?

Just a few ?s

Thanks Bill!

you just buy a used (or new in some cases if you prefer) shaft from a non-roto disco or RR.
you will have to buy a spacer and new bolts. the new flange will come with the u-joint.
the bitch is getting the old flange off the centralizing peg.

How common is this problem? I am waiting on my new HD OME springs and Bilstein shocks for my 97 D1. This is supposed to provide about 2" of lift. Is this a common problem I should look out for with only 2" of lift?

Jeff, I replaced the rotoflex driveshaft with a stock rear driveshaft and stock 4-bolt pinion flange from a 1998 Discovery. I should have mentioned that this stock 98 shaft is, of course, a u-jointed shaft as opposed to a rotoflex shaft. So my old rotoflex shaft is sitting under the workbench with all the other junk. Here's a couple pics of the tcase side of the new uj shaft - it's the same as the old roto shaft:

Todd, it's hit & miss with a 2" lift. Some have well over 2" with no rotoflex problems whatsoever, some burn rotos with less than 2"...

Do you only have to do this for the rear drive shaft in order to get ride of the vibes?

Could someone reference what article everyone is talking about, I replaced my cracked roto on my 2" raised D1 and have vibes now only at 40 mph and over 70mph. I appreciate the help.
