The heater controls all work, except, on occasion I don't get hot air w/ the controls on high heat, just cold. About 1/3 of the time. Eventually it will 'fix itself' and hot air returns.

Never happened before. What's up?
thanks

Just my advice but I wouldnt drive it another inch until you figure out the problem. You either have a leaking heater core, maybe a radiator/ water pump problem or something electrical. But if your antifreeze level is down you need to make sure it stays full. Had the exact same problem with my 98 SD, My heater core sprung a leak, wasted all my antifreeze, and then I overheated and cracked my head and warped the block....bye, bye Disco....

My 95, the heat wasn't that great and wasn't very consistant. I did a flush and fill and replaced the thermostat, checked the wiring and operation of my fans. After that the heat wasn't any better, but I just thought that was how LR's are suppose to be. Until last summer when I had lots of over heating problems when I drove up the big canyon hills out here in Utah. I finally had my radiator rodded and now my truck runs perfect. Lots of heat, gets the inside so hot you end up needing to turn it down, and no more over heating. I have been told that discos of our vintage and if they are near 100k, mine was at 98k, it is common to have a clogged radiator. You might want to check it out. Be careful if you get your rodded, I have heard horror stories of bad jobs, I went to Great Basin rovers and they directed to me someone who does them here in slc and does it right. Other wise I would suggest getting a new radiator.
